Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ajax callback before action javascript?

    Hi,

I have a grid with a button to open a tab in a tabbed_ui component. I am using a standard action javascript to open the tab and it works as expected.

However, I would like to do an ajax callback to check some variables before running the action to open the tab. In detail I want to do some SQL lookups to check the users access rights and depending on the result the tab should open or not. I have only used the action javascripts to open tabs so I am not certain how to go forward doing this in xbasic?

Any ideas or hints on going forward is very appreciated!

    Robert

I think easier way to do will be
to place the sensitive information in a particular grid and require credentials to view them. so you may end up having two grids for the same work one viewable by everybody another by a few.
you may even place a button on the public grid to call the sensitive grid except it won't show without login.
    thanks for reading

Your return from the Callback can run Javascript.

      Code:
      function myCallback as c (e as p)

      ... do your XBasic stuff...

myCallback = "alert('here is my javascript');"

      end function

Depending on your Action Javascript... if it's not too complex... you could include it all on the Callback return. Otherwise, call a Javascript Function which runs your Actions.

Thanks, this might work, but ideally I would like all users to see all records in the grid, but not all should see the details (which is in the tab). Your input has also given me two new ideas based on your comment:
        1. Filtering the grid using a "user filter" but I only give access to "clear all filters" to a certain user group.
        2. When loading the parent grid, do the filtering during the "on initialize event" so the grid is filtered correctly from start. Dont know how to code this but I can probably figure it out.

Thanks, this looks good! The button onclick sends an ajax callback to run an xbasic function, the function itself runs a javascript function depending on the result.

I have only used action javascripts directly on buttons before, had no idea that I could use them in the "action javascript" section.
        Thanks, will try this out!

Re: ajax callback before action javascript?

          Hi

Alpha gives you a huge amount of control. You can put information inside of containers, you can then show hide containers based upon security/variables.
You can do the same with columns and fields.

A lot of people do not take users straight to the "destination" after login, but rather we pass them to a redirect page. In this page you can set variables and much more. This is very quick and the user does not notice it.

Further if you have a security linked "Registered user" table you can hold additional information like Country sex age etc and then filter information shown based upon Country sex age.

When loading the parent grid, do the filtering during the "on initialize event" so the grid is filtered correctly from start. Dont know how to code this but I can probably figure it out.

          Use arguments for this.

          Michael

So... how do you call a JavaScript Action from Xbasic function? Selwyn suggested I use a 'JavaScript Action' instead of calling the onClick event of a hidden button from my Xbasic function. I can see how to create a JavaScript Action and name it, but I can't find anything about how to call it from my Xbasic function. Thanks.

Create two Action JavaScripts one for the Server callback, and the second one for the JavaScript. Call them one after the other and other - make sure you click on the Synchronous mode (important) by clicking the checkbox at the bottom left hand side of the page where you list these Action JavaScripts.

since ajaxCallback xbasic is character string
you should be able to add the entire function as a single long string to e.javascript object in xbasic. not the title just the function.

Re: ajax callback before action javascript?

You really don't want to do both in action javascript, even if you run them synchronously because the actions still aren't dependent on each other. IOW, it will run one and then the other, regardless of if the first one completed successfully. That's why you want to call it from your function or serer-side event because the second won't happen without the first completing successfully.

Also, a javascript action is different from action javascript; yeah, it's confusing. A javascript action is something you save and can call from most places inside that component and action javascript is inside an individual event. I first started using javascript actions it with list controls as they are pretty handy to define and use in there.

In your Xbasic function (if doing an Ajax callback) You would have something like this at the end.

                  Code:
                  yourfunction name = "youractionjavascriptfunction;"
Any other javascript to be returned to the client can go in there as well.

Or, if it is in a server-side action that has access to e.javascript, what Gandhi said. I'm not sure if all ajax callbacks have access to e.javascript but most server-sides events do.

Depending on what your Actions are, you can turn on "Run actions synchronously" or...

When your Callback completes, do this...

                    Code:
                    function myCallback as c (e as p)

                    ... do your XBasic stuff...

                    myCallback = "{dialog.Object}.runAction('sayHello');"

                    end function
                    or... do this...

                    Code:
                    function myCallback as c (e as p)

                    ... do your XBasic stuff...

                    myCallback = "myJSFunction();"

                    end function
which calls a javascript function named myJSFunction. From within myJSFunction you can do anything you like... run JS, run JS Actions, call Ajax Callbacks.

                    Alpha's got you covered.

David, thanks. It's working nicely to use myCallback = "{dialog.Object}.runAction('sayHello');" at the end of my Xbasic functions.
