Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Didn't I essentially acknowledge that in my previous post?

Re: Will Windows 9 make V11 obsolete?

I don't know what build of v11 I was using when I moved to Windows 8, but I experienced no trouble.

Peter, I agree on the breaking change in v11 related to IE11--that was a place where Alpha really could have won some points with its developer community, and since they fixed it so quickly for AA, I imagine they could have done it for v11 without too much trouble. But since Alpha can (somewhat rightly) say it's Microsoft's doing, and Alpha can (somewhat rightly) say that a v11 developer can simply move back to IE10 and continue working on their no-longer-updated A5 v11, we as the developers have to accept it.

Subscription model where-why? It is totally against developers common sense to get subscription or do I miss something?

Of course the only reasonable way to get Alpha Anywhere is to buy one year term. And after one year buy another brand new copy again with one year term. So after two year you own two copys of Alpha Anywhere . One updated and second one half updated(not updated during last year).

Re: Will Windows 9 make V11 obsolete?

My experience was that v10.5 would not work on Win8. There are reports this issue was mysteriously resolved in later versions. The guidance to fix the problem at the time was to upgrade to v11. After much angst Alpha finally notified the developer community this was the case, so I upgraded to v11. V11 did work with Win8 and Win8.1. I do understand that IE v11 has caused some issues. While we were told v11 would continue to be supported this did not prove out.

My rub with the process is this, there are new releases of the OS all the time. Win8->8.1->8.1v2-> soon Win9. It would be nice if Alpha would test their software against these new OS releases as they go through beta and RTM phases. Then inform us of any issues. I believe there are copies of the OS available through Microsoft for just these purposes. It would just seem like a good business practice for anyone selling development tools.

It would also position developers to better explain the future of their applications to the their customers.

Having gone through this before I do know not everyone agrees with me and please don't take this as trying to start a debate. Its just me stating my opinion
          Regards,

Re: Will Windows 9 make V11 obsolete?

Ken, I'm not making any arguments for or against a subscription model here. I'm simply saying that if Alpha's thinking is "you keep paying us, we'll keep updating it", then they're not going to see a problem. It's those of us who don't want to "keep paying" that Alpha can choose whether to provide updates to or not. They obviously lost points with Peter and I (and others) on their failure to make v11 work with IE11, but it's still their prerogative if I'm specifically telling them that I'm not planning to pay them more for newer versions or on a subscription.

So you are using a "Pre-Release"? . The last actual release that I am aware of is 3381-4096 .

What I do not understand is why Alpha would continue to publish Pre-Releases for a short time on a version they where no longer going to support unless they did not know when they where going to start releasing the beta of the next version.

Are you developing production versions of your apps using the last Pre-Release of V11?

                    Good question.
I was told that if I wanted to use it I should thoroughly test it to ensure compliance.
I have not seen any complaints that the latest release has broken anything, so I guess it's up to the individual.

I'm using a prerelease too--it's not actually listed on that page anymore, but I think it was between the June and July prereleases. It's stable in every way that I've found. I'd also like to see them turn one of those late prereleases into an actual patch, particularly because there were bugs documented with the last patch almost as soon as it was released, but it doesn't look like they're going to.

I am using version 3396-4099. I decided to stop there because I was not certain anymore what Alphas plans were with version 11 and what modifications they were planning.

When I look Peters version numbers 3788-4187 I just wonder what these undocumented modifications are.

Although for 3788-4187 they don't say specifically.

Yes, I just delivered an app using that build. However, I did have one major problem. This was/is a desktop app. During development every time I modified a function that change would not be reflected when running the function. I would either have to bail out of Alpha altogether or at least reboot the application. Actually, this didn't happen every time, but most of the time. It was somewhat erratic. I didn't have time to test if this problem also exists in the last official build. By the time I was done with the project i kind of wished I had delivered using the official build but my client is using this app intensively and has not reported any problems. But I think like a lot of Alpha bugs, it affects the development process and not the actual functioning of the application.

I do wish Alpha would address the "hanging" patch issue in v11 and provide additional support, but I'm talking in the wind.

Yesterday, when I was taking my daily walk around the lake, I saw this guy walking these two big German Sheperds. Kind of scary almost, but really nice dogs. My uncle used to have a German Sheperd. Trained with it everyday - it was his passion. One time he lost some kind of tool or device he used to train the dog during a rain storm when we walked the dog through the woods for over an hour (I was age 10 at the time). He sent the dog to find it. A couple hours later the dog came back in the pouring rain with the tool in his mouth. That was one smart dog!
