    Default Table change slowing down operations

    Hi

    I have a master table which I am using to append and post from into another table.

    I have been trying to change the lengths of some of the fields in my master table and it seems to be causing my operations to slow down. On further investigation it appears that if I make any change to this table (i.e. add another field etc) it slows down my operations. Even if the field I have added is not involved in the operations it still slows them down. Does anyone have any idea of why this may be?

    Thank you

    Adding fields or changing field widths shouldn't affect operation speed. If you append with either of the unique options they will slow down as the record count grows but only with many thousands of records.

    Alpha assumes that the possibility exists for multi user access of tables while operations are running. If you convert operations to xbasic you can modify the line which opens the master table and add the exclusive use parameter or test to see if exclusive use can be obtained and branch accordingly. Exclusive use yields faster execution.

    Like

    Code:
    itmtest = table.in_use(a5.Get_Path()+chr(92)+"store.DBF")
    IF itmtest
    	a_tbl = table.OPEN(a5.Get_Path()+chr(92)+"store.DBF")
    ELSE
    	a_tbl = table.OPEN(a5.Get_Path()+chr(92)+"store.DBF",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
    END IF
    There can be only one.

    Fiona,

    Have you tried to compact your database. That might improve performance.
    Perhaps you could provide us with an example of your database? For now there's not much info to go on.

    Hi Both

    Thank you for your replies and sorry for the delay in replying back to you, I have been off work.

    We have actually found out what the issue was. When we make a table change we actually just need to go into the field rules and make a minor change/re-save them and this appears to have solved our issue.

    Thanks again

    Fiona
