Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Advice on User Interface for linked tables.

I'm building a setup at the moment based on a backend with a few linked tables. The linked tables would look something like this.

    Table 1
-----Table A (FK from table 1, can have many records linked to table 1)
-----Table 2 (FK from table 1, can have many records linked to table 1)
----------Table B (FK from table 2, can have many records linked to table 2)

There will always be a record in table 1 and at least one record linking to it from table A but sometimes there are multiple records in A.
There is not always a record in Table 2 but there can be 1 or many.
There is never a record in Table2 or in Table B without a record in Table 1

So, what would be a good way to create my user interface (grids, UX, whatever) so that I don't get a bunch of join duplicates but I can still show the most information from all of the tables?

    Suggestions?

Why did this get moved to DB design? I have the DB design already, I need help with the UI to show my data properly.

I would use a UX with repeating sections. The repeating sections will be your linked tables. You can tidy it all up any number of ways: A button could open/close specific containers that the repeating sections are in. You could use tabs. You could have pop-up windows. etc., etc.

Re: Advice on User Interface for linked tables.

Thanks Mike. I should probably be more clear....

I'm using UX's for data entry into the tables already. What I'd like some ideas on is how to let the users navigate the data for viewing and/or picking a record to modify.

I'm not saying a UX (possibly with embedded grids or lists) wouldn't also work for viewing. That may be the way to go, or with some combination.

So, what I'm really after is viewing/navigation through the records. Editing and entry I've got down.

I think of grids as viewing agent and dialog (aka ux in your version ) as editing / inputting agent. even though they can be used in both mechanisms.

Linked tables and MS SQL while using Alpha Five Grids

            Hello There,

I will use grids since there are a lot of automation built in. You can create relations with one grid to another while using the Row Expander Linked Content property. You can use also the detail view to display all the data within the grid. See if this article takes you some where: Database Development with Alpha Five v11 and MS SQL Server: Using Linking/Control Tables
