{dialog.Object}.populateDropdownBox error

Am i missing something stupidly simple...in a dialog with only a new blank dropdown and button.

In the button OnClick event is:

{dialog.Object}.populateDropdownBox('selectaddress',[['alpha 2','A2'],['beta 2','B2'],['display for c','C2']],true);

When I click the button I get an error: Unable to get property 'false' of undefined or null referenece

selectaddress is the name of the dropdown.

Please help :)

I don't fully expect this to be your problem, but from the documentation (http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...wnBox%20Method):

controlName - name of the control (must be uppercase)

If making the control name upper case doesn't work, can you run it in FireFox with FireBug running and inspect the error? That will give you the most information.

Also, is this all the code in your OnClick event?

So then capitalization doesn't matter. I kinda figured that wouldn't be helpful. Most of alpha's JS functions call ToUpper() on the parameters. Something else is going wrong.....

What's the type of the control?

I haven't figured out the return value if different.

OK. I tried this. I tried your code exactly and got an error. I changed 'selectaddress' to 'SELECTADDRESS' and the error went away and populateDropdownBox works just fine.

The reason you need to specify your control name in all caps is that somewhere in the populateDropdownBox code, this is called:

        ele = $(this.dialogId + '.V.R1.' + columnName + '_A5INSTANCE' + instNum);
    }
    return ele;
}

columnName is not auto-capitalized for you, so when $ goes to look for the control, it searches for "DLG1.V.R1.selectaddress", which doesn't exist. The dropdown is named "DLG1.V.R1.SELECTADDRESS". So, it tries to find a repeating section object instead, but there are no repeating sections. So, error.

yes, that is correct.
the function does say the field name MUST be in caps. the rest is ok, even the returned value comes out right.

Sarah and Gandhi, thankyou so much! Serves myself right for skimming over the documentation; maybe I'll learn one day. I pretty much spent a whole day trying to get this to work - I was pulling my hair out - but today all is good :) God bless

I don't know what you were referring to here, so I assumed it was the control name (SELECTADDRESS). I didn't realize you were talking about the array of values. The value array doesn't matter, as long as it takes one of 2 forms:

// Form 1 - no stored val:
var arr = ['Alpha','Beta','Gamma','Delta'];

// Form 2 - stored val:
var arr = [['Alpha','a'],['Beta','b'],['Gamma','c'],['Delta','d']];

but still the stored value does not come yet.

Not sure what you were looking for with stored value. {dialog.object}.getValue('SELECTADDRESS') should return the second val - A2, B2, C2.

For the rest of the statement, originally I posted that way. Like shouting at alpha's ear to hear me.
And return value works too when I went back to the table to check.
