Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    eMail setup on Terminal Server

    I'm trying to setup email in my app that is hosted using Terminal Services.

    On my desktop, using
    Code:
    email_smtp_open()
    I have it working fine. However when I try it in my server environment, it doesn't work.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks,

    ~ Tom

    Re: eMail setup on Terminal Server

    Is there any reason I would need to have a default email address setup on the serve for this to work?

    I don't have permission to get to the "C" drive or My Computer properties.

            I didn't think email_smtp_open() required a email setup. Was I wrong?

              Found it - you have to open the port on the server - mandrill on mine is using port 587
              call IT - not sure about the port for you.

                Sorry for not responding sooner. I've been under the weather.

                While many ports are open by default on a typical desktop, they are not on Server 2008. If using Gmail, you need 465 and 995 open. Alpha defaults to 25 for smtp_open. And you're right, you don't need a profile to use smtp_open.

                  Thanks Martin and Finian; I'll call tomorrow and ask about opening those ports.

                  So each user/company, may have a different port depending on their email provider. So I'll have to find out their ports, then ask that they be opened.

                  Thank again, and Finian - hope you're feeling better soon.

                    Tom,
                    The ports are part of the email_smtp_open arguments -
                    Code:
                    EMAIL_SMTP_OPEN( pSocket as P, SMTP_Server as C [, [COLOR="#FF0000"]Port as N [/COLOR][, Username as C [, Password as C  [, Mode as C ]]]] )
                    We have each of the function call arguments as a field in our "Staff" table and the values pertinent to each staff member loads into global variables during login as part of the autoexec. The email_smtp_open() function call is then a generic call within scripts, with the value for each arguments being supplied by the values in the global variables. Since email is performed extensively within our app, this seems to work well, and adding and maintaining the argument values a process of maintaining the Staff table, not the script code.
                    Mike W

                      So I have the above working "silently".

                      I don't see a setting within the email_smtp_open() function to not run silently and show the email template and let the user edit the message then click the SEND button.

                      How can I see the email prior to it being sent?

                      Thanks ~ Tom

                        Re: eMail setup on Terminal Server

                        If you want to use email_smtp_open etc. and have bells and whistles, I think you'll need to build your own interface. Otherwise you're back with profiles and/or connecting to the external email program.

                        You could do this with a simple xdialog or form to display the From/To, message text etc and pass those variables to the email_smtp_open function.

                          Finian,

                          I just started down that road this morning. I'm having a problem with "seeing" my variables on the Dialog form.

                          Code:
                          dim pm as P
                          	pm.attachments = ""
                          	pm.lrelated = .T.
                          	pm.from = "[email protected]"
                          	pm.from_alias = "PALs Software"
                          	pm.to = "[email protected]
                          	pm.subject = "Subject"
                          	pm.message ="My message"
                          I open a form in Dialog Mode. How do I dim the above variables so I can see them on the dialog form?

                          Thanks again,

                          ~ Tom

                            got it. I had to go for a walk to wake up!

                            After I loaded the form as Dialog, I just filled the fields using Frm:vSubject.text = "Subject" the showing the form. Piece of cake!

                            Thanks again.

                              OOps... one more question

                              How can I develop an input dialog, like ui_get_text() to get rich text to insert into the body of an email. I'd prefer not to add another field to a table. Is there a variable setup for rich text?

                              pm.message = My_Rich_Text variable.

                              Thanks ~ Tom
