Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Phonegap build instructions

Awhile back I saw a large document around 80 pages with step by step instructions to do a phonegap build somewhere on the alpha website I believe. Can't find it now. Anyone have a link to it?

Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for. Don't need the panel card doc. I know how to build the mobile apps. Thanks anyway!

          Re: Phonegap build instructions

Alpha/PhoneGap Build (APGB) has been in the pre-releases for a little while now. Install the pre-release (Help, View release notes) and you'll see a PhoneGap button on the Web Control Panel. Excellent integration.

As David K says it is all in there now (Pre-release anyway)

Most of that 80 page document is now obsolete, Yey!
Thanks Alpha! as just reading about the command line stuff was giving me a rash :)

                Re: Phonegap build instructions

I believe the APGB Document is up to date... last updated March 28 with the current stuff at that time.

However, I have to say that the documentation and walk-through that Bob Moore put together for the Node.js etc. stuff was flawless. Going through that process with the documentation was a cake-walk compared we used to have to do before the integration.

Reading it may have produced a rash... but following the docs step-by-step was the ointment. What's sad is that it was such a great doc... and now no longer needed.

                  Hi David,

What Node.js documentation are you referring to?

                    Thanks DavidK

re; Kiwibruce: "Most of that 80 page document is now obsolete"
I completely disagree, I only deleted a few pages that described how to install NodeJS and how to install PhoneGap on your machine. Since we are now using the PhoneGap Build API this is no longer required.

The rest of the doc (if you actually take the time to read it) describes IN DETAIL how to build a simple component that uses a number of useful PhoneGap native functions. The source code to everything is included in the alpha.exe/PhoneGap folder. I describe the thought process behind the code, using what I consider, best practice techniques for building a mobile app with PhoneGap. I assume you are not an Alpha novice and that you at least know what a JavaScript object is. I also have additional chapters on debugging, iOS provisioning, etc.

This is all very relevant to properly learning how to use PhoneGap with Alpha or for that matter any other JavaScript front end framework.

The document is a continued work in progress, and will be for some time. I'm adding new functionality to the builder all the time (a lot of it based on some great feedback from a few of you, Thanks) There is also a lot of things that I haven't documented yet, (ajax callbacks, embedded components, built in-images, local storage, offline storage, etc, etc.)
While the document may have some areas that are obsolete when I push a new version of the builder into a pre-release build, the changes will be made as quickly as possible to the doc. Make sure that you refresh your browser, empty your cache or whatever to make sure you have the latest release of the doc.
                    Bob Moore

Personally I haven't used PhoneGap yet, but it's absolutely great that Bob is carefully documenting that and keeping it up to date. I wish everything in Alpha had the kind of documentation that Bob is providing.

Oh, so that's why I couldn't find the documentation on Node.js. I thought I remembered seeing it somewhere. Bob has already removed it from the PhoneGap PDF document which is automatically downloaded to my computer when updates are made. I have probably received at least 3 PhoneGap documentation updates in the past 2 weeks. Most obsolete documents don't get updated every few days. This is by far the most complete and in depth Alpha documentation to come out since I have been an Alpha developer.
