Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Suggestions to Save User Preferences?

I was wondering if anyone is currently saving their users preferences in their Alpha applications and if so, how do you go about it?

I was thinking about using the repository table but I'm not sure how it will like it if I add extra columns.

I don't have too many things that I need to save at the moment but some users have asked me if I could save certain things for them. I have a button to tack the flying menu out in my Tabbed_UI for instance and they don't want to hit it every time they log in. Some have asked that their preferred tabs would open automatically. I've recently added the ability to switch search styles from "contained in" to "starts with" and such. Stuff Like that.

I have a page that is included in the header of my tabbed_ui where I set session variables and such. I was thinking that I could save preferences too, by just saving the last state things were in.

In any case, I'd like some ideas.

That's going to get complicated quickly depending on how flexible you offer customizations, but I'd think in many cases the easiest would be using cookies with the values stored in a table. Cookies are accessible by XBasic and Javascript and will stay stored in the browser even when they log off. You can set the cookies on a intermediary redirect page after login.

I've never really worked with cookies before (Being that I only really develop for an internal intranet site). Besides baking them and eating them anyway. Maybe I'll need to research how to use the web variety. What's the best way to create and save a cookie to a users browser?

You create a "Users" table and store them there along with each user's record. When they log back in, the preferences are available, you can put them in session vars, etc as needed. The Alpha "repository" is too cumbersome to use, have to remember the functions, plus not very flexible if you end up storing preferences for Users, Vendors, and various odds and ends. You can use cookies, but then those preferences would only exist if the user used the exact same computer AND browser and did not clear their cookies since you last saved them. Cookies are good for temporary storage like shopping_cart_id, or things you don't mind losing.
