Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    international characters from onGridInitialize to <a5:r> tags

    I'm trying to set labels to multiple languages using <a5:r> tags. I'm defining the translation string in the onGridInitialize event with an SQL query:
    Code:
    e.tmpl.languageDefinition = sql_records_get("::Name::mydb","SELECT CONCAT('<a5:r>',Lang_NameEnglish,'</a5:r>=\"',Lang_NameLocal,'\"') FROM tbl_language WHERE Lang_Key = :LangID","","",args)
    It works as expected except for international characters (e.g. Tlphone), which instead are displayed with garbage characters. I found in the documentation the code e.tmpl.encodeLanguageStringAsUTF8 = .f. that theoretically takes care of the problem, but that's not getting the job done either.

    Any pointers out there? Thanks...

    Re: international characters from onGridInitialize to <a5:r> tags

    So, after writing this, the labels suddenly started displaying as expected, even with international characters. However, I'm now having the same problem with dropdown choices set to a variable set in the onGridIntialize:
    Code:
    e.rtc.groupStage = sql_records_get("::Name::HOPEdb","SELECT SCAGroupStageName_Name, SCAGroupStageName_KeyID FROM tbl_scagroupstagename WHERE SCAGroupStageName_LangID = :LangID","","",args)
    Works as expected except the international characters are garbage. Thoughts anyone?

      Re: international characters from onGridInitialize to <a5:r> tags

      Hi Chris,

      I recognize this problem :(
      We are using the e.tmpl.encodeLanguageStringAsUTF8 = .f.

      And I have a function to get the translations from our database depending on the language.

      But sometimes in some situation it looks like garbage and then I just try to avoid the special charaters.

        That's disappointing if not unacceptable. Are the other international developers just living with garbage characters too? Any other suggestions out there?

          Re: international characters from onGridInitialize to <a5:r> tags

          Chris,

          I have just tested to see if i have a problem with dropdownboxes.

          I have put this in the choice for a dropdown
          <a5:r>Kopieren</a5:r>|AAAAB
          <a5:r>kostendrager</a5:r>|AAAAC
          <a5:r>n</a5:r>|AAAAD

          For the dutch language the first is displayed as Kopiren
          For the german language the second is displayed as Kostentrger
          And the third one is displayed as n whatever the language is. Which is NOT correct.

          So my solution is NOT to use the international characters in the string I want to translate but ONLY in the translated string.
          And that works ok. The users see the translated string with international characters.

          In all webcomponents the same languages are defined, there are no definitons for translations in the components.
          These are all loaded with a serverside event (ondialogexecute, ongridexecute).
          This is a function getting the translations for the active language.

          I have just noticed that I put htmlencode(rs.data(2),.T.) in that function. Maybe that is the thing that you are missing?

          FUNCTION Language_Read AS c (e as p)
          e.tmpl.encodeLanguageStringAsUTF8 = .f.
          dim language as c
          dim sqlCommand as c

          if flag = .f. then
          dim msg as c
          msg = "Could not connect to database. Error reported was: " + cn.CallResult.text
          'we need to encode this for javascript since the message will be sent back to the browser for display

          'file_pointer.flush()

            I am absolutely certain that I tried that method--putting <a5:r>option1</a5:r>|1 as the dropdown choices--and it wasn't working for me but now is.

            I'm not using the htmlencode() but it seems to work without for what little I've tested--do you know of something that breaks without this code that doesn't with it?

            Thanks so so much for leading me back to this option.

              Hi Chris,

              The only problem I see at this moment is with bubble help in an action button in the toolbar.
              The international characters is garbage there :(
              The bubble help on an icon in a grid is ok.

              No clue anymore why i put it there.
