Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: using server 2012

You did not get any answers to this. Did you try it yet?

I know I have been over other threads where people were using server 2012. It seems there were no great issues, but I don't see anybody posting here.

I just did a search using "server 2012" (with parenthesis) and go this as one.

I do not have a client using higher than 2008 as yet, so was watching this thread to see what I may run into.

Yes, I saw that too, but it is not relevant for any of my work.

The client has a disc image of the server, so we have decided, if we buy a new server, to restore from the image. The OS. registry, data and all.

Do you mean Windows Server 2012? I am using Windows Server 2012 on a solid state drive VPS and have had no issues running Alpha Anywhere WAS.

It was a dbf/desktop question - not web. But thanks for the reply.

Martin, I've been running Server 2012 and now 2012 R2 as a dbf repository for many months with no problems. Apologies for not responding earlier as I assumed you'd posted in the wrong forum. To be honest, I didn't even consider that there may be an issue with the file system, and it would appear I was correct.

Thanks - I posted in V10 because we are using V10, which runs in W7/server 2008R2 - but since I presume 20012 is a W8 core, that there could be issues with V10.

                Re: using server 2012

Pretty sure that using almost any server from MS when placing server files with adb, dbf and etc. there should be 0 problems, no matter the version of alpha5. The issue may arise if trying to run dev ot rt on the system. I have successfully placed the server a5 files on a Linux box but with a helper app. some years ago just to test it. It worked, but not real fast.

Just checked, I have win8.1. There is server 2008 and server 2012 on here. Just not installed.

Disable SMB3 and enable SMB1 on windows 2012. Then disable opportunistic locking.

                      Andrew,
Have you done that and compared performance between the two?
I know when I tried that on 2008, it cut the performance in half.

                        Re: using server 2012

I have not personally done this. I tried moving a v8 database to a terminal server running server 2008 and 2012. In both cases issues with the server prevented going live. 2008 had issues with printing and the 2012 brought enough UI changes that I did not want to train users on how the new 2012 UI worked.

The SMB tips came from here: http://www.dataaccess.com/whitepaper...adcaching.html

I am running three companies on 2008R2 on T/S using V10.5 - runs perfectly

But, on a shadow database, (where the SMB would be relevant - would not be relevant on T/S) I tried Disabling SMB3 and the speed/performance was cut in half.

However, I have not had any index issues, anyway.

Well, we are looking at buying a new server, but running T/S. Since 10.5 will not run on Windows 8, I wonder if it would have the same issues running on server 2012 since Alpha may see it as a "Windows 8 " system. Anyone know - if so, we can stay with 2008R2.

I am running the version 10.5 application server on a Windows 2012 Virtual server. I also have the full version running. I seem to remember that installing the full version caused an error message from alpha five on installation. However, I think that was solved by running version 10.5 in windows compatibility mode for older software. I have not been doing active design work in ver 10.5 on Server 2012, but the web server works fine. I see above you are talking about the desktop, though.
