Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Will File Upload in a UX work if not bound to any tables?

I'm trying to get a file upload to work without being bound to any tables. The reason is that I'm uploading a file just temporarily and it will be deleted as soon as the operations are performed on it by the server.

Basically, it's to combine multiple pdfs. The UX has a repeating section in which the user can add multiple files to be combined and after they are done, they hit a button and get 1 file back. I have no reason to save the files locations in the table, they just need to be seen by my xbasic function.

Any ideas? Maybe it does work and I have something else wrong?

    Hi Jinx,

You should be able to use the "File Upload - User Defined" Action Javascript. I was just testing it last week with an unbound UX.

Hmm... I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. The upload "looks" like it's working, but the file never arrives in the specified location. (I'm trying the User Defined version at the moment)

This is the same behavior I was having with the regular file upload.

ETA: Dave, do you have a working example I might see?

Also, I do have file upload working on another component that is bound to a table.

It's not pretty and there is not much to it other than an empty xbasic callback with a debug(1) statement. The uploaded file data is stored in e.fileArray[i].data.

            Thanks!

I'll check it out. Probably tomorrow as I've got to get out of work here pretty quick. I was also checking these out, which may help.

I have tested uploading both bound and unbound images. The only issue with unbound image uploading if I remember correctly is that you cannot create the optional thumb image.

OK, I'm back to trying to work on this again.

How do I get the "uploaded" binary data to save to a file on my server?

Re: Will File Upload in a UX work if not bound to any tables?

I FINALLY got this to work.
                  So, here's the trick.

                  Create an Upload button
Select "File Upload - User defined" from you action javascript choices in your "upload" button.
In your Server-Side Events inside the action javascript file upload box put in the name of your Xbasic function you want to upload the files. In my case "UploadPDFs".
                  Then, go to Xbasic functions...

Your function should look something like this:
                  Code:
                  function UploadPDFs as v (e as p)

                  dim BlobUploaded as b = e.fileArray[1].Data
                  dim pfx as c = a5ws_getcurrentuser()
                  dim fnm as c = e.fileArray[1].filename
                  dim fld as c = "C:\A5Webroot\DBW_Downloads"

                  dim nwn as c = fld + chr(92) + pfx + "-" +fnm
                  File.From_blob(nwn,BlobUploaded)

                  end function
Obviously, I'm renaming it and I have a few other things going on that I didn't bother posting in the code, but the key is to get the binary blob out of the e.fileArray[1].Data variable and then later save it to a file on your server (or location accessible from your server) with the File.From_blob function.

This is for uploading a single file. Uploading multiple files at once will be a bit different I'm sure.

And no, I didn't find any other videos that helped. The ones I linked above kind of put me on the right track but I had to figure out how to actually save it where I wanted.

For multiple files, just create a while loop and write out the data for each entry in e.fileArray.

Re: Will File Upload in a UX work if not bound to any tables?

Thanks Dave, and yes, that's what you'd have to do for multiples. I'm only allowing one file since I'm doing some other funny stuff and I have the upload button in a repeating section.

It now all works properly and allows a user to upload as many pdfs to combine as they want. The pre-combined pdfs and the finished combined pdf get deleted from the server afterwards.

Later on I'm going to add functionality to allow users to encrypt pdfs and set passwords to them as well. This way it's all internal and we don't have to rely on paid versions of software (besides what we already have) or external sites to modify pdf documents.
