Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Server Availability Utility (useful for Always Up users)

I've written a simple utility that can be used with the Sanity Check option in AlwaysUp or from a batch file to check the availability of an Alpha Server site. The archive contains a ReadMe file, a batch file to test the configuration and the utility. The only change that has to be made to use the utility is to modify the CheckAlphaServer.exe.config file to edit the actual URL of the server you want to verify.

Re: Server Availability Utility (useful for Always Up users)

    Hi Brad

I just set-up your utility so I can monitor Server A from Server B. Server B runs Always up and starts a default program like notepad, then in the Sanity Check I referenced your utility which points to Server A. End result is when Server A is not available the sanity check fails on B and I get an email.

    So far it works well.

    Thanks,
    tom

Re: Server Availability Utility (useful for Always Up users)

I'm glad it helps. I run it on several servers for clients to make sure their servers stay up and running in the event of an error or server crash. It's nice to see a different take on the use of the utility.

This is a very good idea -exactly the last "missing link", cause once in a while the A5-application server fails, but Always up does not notice...
We run our application on 4 instances of A5WAS with different IP-adresses under control of Always up: how can we configure your utility for use in all 4 instances?

        Thanks,
        Dietmar

Re: Server Availability Utility (useful for Always Up users)

Dietmar just create four subdirectories (instance1, instance2, etc) and copy the CheckAlphaServer utiilty and configuration file into each directory. Add the URL of one of the four instances (in your case use the corresponding IP address of the Alpha server and the port number) to the CheckAlphaServer.exe.config file in each of the corresponding directories then in AlwaysUp modify the profile of each of your servers and point the sanity check to the corresponding subdirectory. The utility is very small and designed to be used in exactly this manner.

A second option rather than creating four subdirectories is to copy the application and configuration file four times in the same directory renaming the .exe and .config files to the same name i.e. CheckAlpha1.exe CheckAlpha1.exe.config, CheckAlpha2.exe CheckAlpha2.exe.config and then modify the config files in each copy to point to your different instances. AlwaysUp's sanity check for each server would then be pointed to the renamed .exe that checks the corresponding Alpha server. To test each utility's setup you could also copy the TestConfig.bat file four times and then modify each to point to the renamed executables.

Here's the source code. It is written in Visual Studio 2013 and I've included the complete VS solution.
