Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Oracle error inserting simple table

    Hello,

    My environment:
    - Alpha Anywhere 12
    - Web component UX
    - Database connection Oracle 9i (9.2)

I am trying to insert in a very simple table named USER_TABLE with columns ID (number) , USER_NAME (Varhcar2(100)), HASH (varchar2(32))
I have connected the ID which is the primary key with a SEQUENCE in the UX binding.
When I try to insert I get the error: 'ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column

    I appreciate any help
    Regards

Re: Oracle error inserting simple table

    Hello,

Most people in these forms are using either MySQL or MsSQL. Looking at Google I found the answer to your error:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ora_0146...ong_column.htm

Let us know how it came up.

    Regards,

      Hi Doron,

Unfortunately this is a misleading error.
The problem has to do with the db support at alphasoftware libraries.
When I change to oracle 11g2 and same client everything runs ok.
But it is not the right solution for me since a lot of companies still have oracle 9i.

      Regards

        Hello Vangelis,

I know that most small to medium size companies do not use Oracle. So not so sure why would use use Oracle from the first place. Try to report the above issue to Alpha.

        Regards,

        Doron

Re: Oracle error inserting simple table

          Hi Vangelis,

We would need to be able to recreate the error here in development at Alpha Software to answer the question definitively.

Often an Oracle function does not accept long text values directly, but I don't see the insert statement being generated in your posts.

Can you send us the create statements for your table and the component that is producing the error?

Send as much information to help reproduce the error to [email protected].

          Thanks!

          Kurt

Vangelis, were you able to solve the problem you were having ?
I too am getting that error appearing: 'ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column' whenever I do an insert.
I am currently trying to figure out how to see the sql command being sent to the database during the insert. I am using arguments within the sql string.

Re: Oracle error inserting simple table

              Hi Robert,

Yes, I solved it by installing Oracle 11g2. If you're trying to solve the problem in oracle 9i probably you will face more issues apart this.
If you are already in 11g2 then the problem is somewhere in your sql command so give me more details to check it.

              Regards
              Vangelis
