Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Show Deleted Records

    Hello

    I want to show a browse of deleted record and then enable the user to selectively undelete records.

    If the table is called hols.dbf, could someone tell me what the filter would be on a browse that would show only deleted records in the table.

    Thanks for your help. It is very much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Deleted records are not visible in a browse.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan

      Is there a way in which I can get a user from a screen to undelete records?
      Kind Regards

        Do you mark records for any reason for this table?

        If not I can write you a script to change deleted records to marked records and then you can filter a browse for marked(). The user could then unmark records and have the ones left marked be deleted again.
        There can be only one.

          This will change deleted records to marked records and unmark previously marked records. You should change the table name "abc" to "hols".

          Code:
          tbl = table.open("abc")
          tbl.fetch_last()
          recs = tbl.recno()
          tbl.order("recno()")
          for qz = 1 to recs
          	tbl.fetch_goto(qz)
          	del = tbl.field_get(0).value_get()
          	if del = "*"
          	tbl.change_begin()
          	tbl.field_get(0).value_put("-")
          	tbl.change_end(.T.)
          	else if del = "-"
          	tbl.change_begin()
          	tbl.field_get(0).value_put(" ")
          	tbl.change_end(.T.)
          	end if
          next
          tbl.close()
          This assumes the last record added to the table has not been deleted. There's an alternate way to get the count of active and deleted records that doesn't rely on the last record number.

          Code:
          tbl = table.open("abc")
          recs = tbl.records_get()+tbl.records_deleted()
          tbl.order("recno()")
          for qz = 1 to recs
          	tbl.fetch_goto(qz)
          	del = tbl.field_get(0).value_get()
          	if del = "*"
          	tbl.change_begin()
          	tbl.field_get(0).value_put("-")
          	tbl.change_end(.T.)
          	else if del = "-"
          	tbl.change_begin()
          	tbl.field_get(0).value_put(" ")
          	tbl.change_end(.T.)
          	end if
          next
          tbl.close()

              Re: Show Deleted Records

              The code to delete the records left marked by the user after/if they have unmarked any in the browse is simpler.

              Code:
              dim tbl as P
              tbl = table.open("hols")
              tbl.delete_range("marked()")
              tbl.close()

                Thanks Stan. The Alpha desktop world would be far poorer, without your philanthropy.

                  Re: Show Deleted Records

                  Alex,
                  don't know wherther you application is a multi-user app, but if it is, caution. According to the documentation -
                  Note : Do not use <TBL>.DELETE_RANGE()in a multi-user environment where other users may lock records within the range.
                  This applies to adding marked records simultaneously by another user.

                  My question to you is how frequent might this arise? If this is something that is part of a workflow, I would recommend records not be "deleted" but copied to a duplicate holding table, and called from the holding table. That holding table could be purged as needed. This would also serve the issue about the last record possibly being deleted and also problems in a multi-user environment of using a marking method for selecting records.
                  Mike W

                    Thanks Mike.

                    It is multi user and we have thought about a duplicate holding table.
                    However, like most things, its a question of far you want to build in user fool proofing!

                    Kind Regards

                      Hi Alex,
                      My experience... 80% of the work is all about fool proofing (and idiot proofing). Again, if this a process that is even semi-routine.... do it robustly.
