Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

You are not authorized to use this version of Alpha Anywhere.

Hi All. I hope someone can help me.

I just bought a new subscription on Wednesday. My last one expired in January. As my previous license was in my last company's name, and this new one is in my own company's name I thought it best to start from scratch so I completely removed all Alpha Software from my computers. I then renamed my computers and re-installed the latest build of Alpha assuming I would open it and enter my new license details.

Unfortunately the software seems to remember my old license despite being totally un-installed. When I open the new installation it says I am not authorised to use this version and need to contact support (which I have done but have not had anything back in 2 days). I can't get in to Alpha to change any of the license details.

Is there an easy fix to remove from the registry where Alpha is remembering the old license details or something?

    Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you.

    Matt

Hi Steve. Thanks for the reply. Sadly I can't get into Alpha to access any menus. This message appears and then closes Alpha straight away.

Hi Paul. Did you manage to get it fixed? I actually managed to fix it easily myself, albeit a bit annoying. I had to totally remove Alpha and install an old version then patch it up to a version released just before my old subscription expired. Then I went in and updated my license number within Alpha with the new license number. Then I removed it all and installed the latest version again. This worked for me. Hope it helps.

I have the same problem this morning out of the blue.

I phoned Alpha and they said that it is a problem on their end. They thought that they had the issue resolved but it seems not.

We just pushed out an update for the activation. If you exit all copies of Alpha Anywhere and the Activation Server, then restart, it will pick up the update. Please let me know if this works for you.

Ted, we certainly would have warned customers if we were aware of potential problems. The activation system is supposed to have a fail-safe that will allow the software to operate normally in a case like this. That fail-safe was extensively tested in a wide variety of situations and always operated as designed, but that unfortunately is not the case that a limited number of users have encountered recently.

Thanks Lenny, I thought that would be the case.
There are so many ways for things to be configured nowadays that it's almost impossible to pre-empt every possibility.
Things go wrong - that is a "given". Putting them right quickly is essential. Nice job.

Okay, well I spoke too soon. I can access the development workstation but now I am getting these "forbidden access" popup windows on all my users workstations.

I had just restarted the Alpha Application Server. Reboot of the physical Alpha Server seems to have resolved it.
