Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha & Windows 8

    Hello

Am I correct to assume that Alpha 10.5 desktop will be problematic running under Windows 7.?

Because of this, if I am developing desktop applications to run on a Windows 8 workstation network, I should develop exclusively in A5V11

    Kind Regards

    Alex,

As far as I'm aware, A5V11 is currently OK for pure desktop applications on both Win7 & Win8, but web components e.g. grids are broken on IE11 which is the lowest version available for Win8.

I have clients using 10.5 desktop apps on Win 7 boxes no problem.

I had no problems with v10 or v11 on windows 7. I am using v11 on win8.1 now.

          Hello All

Communication....eh! Cannot believe that I wrote that first sentence!! Apologies.

What I meant to say was "Am I correct to assume that Alpha 10.5 desktop will be problematic running under Windows 8.?

I have plenty of clients running 10.5 applications under Windows 7 and as you all quite correctly point out, it is fine.

Having read on the message board that A5V10.5 has issues running under Windows 8, would I be right to develop in A5V11 if it is going on a Windows 8 network.

          Kind Regards

            Alex,

When win8 first came out, I got it and cheap too. v10.5 would not run in win8 at that time. I tried everything to get it to go and nothing worked. Then later on a retry and after a bunch of updates to win8 it did run and run fine. I would say yes and upgrade the win8 to win8.1 even better. You may even find it faster.

Alex, I think your plan is to run A5V11, but if you happen to attempt to run A5V10 on Win8, please report back what you find.

I believe you will not be able to install A5V10.5 on Win8 at all. In my attempt Alpha's registration process aborted the install and said V10 is not "licensed for this Operating System". Note - it happens at the registration stage, not the installation stage.

                Re: Alpha & Windows 8

I just installed v10 on my windows 8.1 machine and 0 problems. I did not insert my code, but did register with 0 problems.
No, I did not try to run it for any reason other than to be sure it came up. I am on the 30 day trial for that. This is a full version and not a desktop only install.

                3.2Gz, 1 terabyte, 6 megs mem, 64 bit win8.1

                Further testing.
When going to a v10 db it worked. When going to alphasports , I got the same as Steve. I did the updates and set compatibility to win7 and it is working great. 4369-3712 and now 10.5

I can run v7 in win8.1, so was sure v10 could work. I did put in my reg code and all is fine here.

I think everybody knows I upgraded to 11 to be sure my shipped out apps work on all of my customers systems.

I will test again to confirm with details (not at that machine right now). But I will drop it after that as being unimportant.

                    Yes Steve,
I just did it as a test and will remove it from the system. I am on v11 so do not need to confuse myself.

One last note. Sometimes when alpha will not run or work right on a win version, you can install it on the c:\ drive in a folder and not in program files and it will run. I always install rt to a folder on the c:\ drive like c:\alda and the data/runtime under that like c:\alda\datafiles .

This has been a gripe of mine - there've been some long threads on this topic Steve - its not to do with any compatibility but an Alpha devised check of WIN version to cajole users to contact AS and purchase upgrades. I've had users suspecting me of recapitalizing on their WIN upgrades

As Dave said, a simple change in Compatibility Mode satisfies the WIN version check in Alpha.
