Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    File upload-download, can't set file name to an existing field at client download

    Hi,

    I am trying to create a very basic file upload/download UX component.
    The files are embedded in a database field "MyFileBlob".

    - I created a "Download" button
    - Action javascript -> download a file
    - I choose; "..UX component contains embedded file" option,
    Then I can't set "export filename" or "client-side filename" to an existing UX field which is coming from database like "MyFileName".

    I have read some solutions, and I think I can manage it somehow (copy/paste..) but I want to understand the logic.
    And I really wonder why there is no direct way for such a basic requirement and I have to struggle with Javascript codes.
    Why can't I just mention {MyFileName} at "client-side filename" field ?

    Thanks in advance..

    Do you have the code you're trying to understand? If you post it here, we can explain it for you.

      Hi Sarah,

      Actually my main question is "why I can't use the action script directly"
      How should I specify the name of the file for the download ?
      Please have a look at the attached images.

        Alpha didn't design it to work that way. You should consider submitting a feature request/bug report on the matter. I've had a run in with this deficiency before. Which leads me to your next question...

        Convert your action to Text Mode by selecting the "Text Mode" radio button at the top and modify the JavaScript on the Declarations - Global tab so it will use the filename from the row:

        downloadFileName.png

        Code:
        window['{grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_IMAGE_2_1'] = function(rowNum,rowId,objEle) {
        [COLOR="#FF0000"]var export_name = {grid.object}.('G','FILENAME',rowNum);
        var download_name = {grid.object}.('G','FILENAME',rowNum);
        [/COLOR]
        var data = '__fileTypeField=table.FILETYPE&_getData=true&__exportFilename=' [COLOR="#FF0000"]+ export_name +[/COLOR] '&__objectfieldname=table.FILEBINARY&__csfn=' [COLOR="#FF0000"]+ download_name +[/COLOR] '&__action=Display message&__message=File {shortFilename} not found.';
        {grid.Object}.ajaxCallback('G',rowNum,'__a5DownLoadObjectField','',data);
        }

          Unfortunately, mine is different than yours (I guess because you are using grid, and I am using UX);

            Well, that's no good! Looks like you'll have to do this by setting a session variable with your filename and then referencing the session variable in the function that sets up all the parameters. Unless someone knows how to pass parameters into the function that's being called to populate the data...

              Thx Sarah, I got some clues from your answer (setting session var.), I will try that asap.

                I would be interested in seeing your final solution --- if you solve this. I'm fairly 100% certain others have this problem/will have this problem in the future. Unless Alpha updates the GUI to handle {FILENAME} in those fields.

                  I am not sure if this is the most practical way to do it, but it worked;

                  - ClientSide events -> afterPopulateFromTable
                  - Action Java Script -> Server Side Xbasic
                  - session.TmpFileName= e.dataSubmitted.FILENAME
                  - "download" button -> onclick
                  - After using the genie, turned to "text mode"
                  - "xbasic functions"
                  - DIM p.clientSideFilename as C = session.TmpFileName

                  That's all (see atch.)

                  Thx again and best regards :)

                    So Glad I found this thread!!!

                    Thanks Cemo, Ive been trying to figure this out for while now, works like a charm. Alpha should really add this basic feature to the Genie.
