Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How can I export SQL data to multiple tabs on an Excel spreadsheet?

    There are a few posts about exporting DBF tables to multiple tabs in Excel, and those suggestions are very helpful for DBF files.
    However, my question is about SQL tables, and if it is possible to push SQL data from different SQL tables/views/select statements to multiple tabs in the same Excel file.
    I know that I can make passive or active link tables and export the dbf link tables, but if possible, I would like to avoid that. I will be doing this in a web app, and will deliver the Excel file to the user once completed.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Don't know what tools you have available but since you speak of active and passive link tables you might be able to use

    SQL::ResultSet::ToString()
    or
    SQL::ResultSet::ToDBF()

    With those you eliminate the need for the link tables and can manipulate the results directly.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks, Stan. Do you know if there is any way to move the data directly from SQL to a multi-tab Excel file?

        Don't think so.

        The output of SQL::ResultSet::ToString() looks suspiciously like tab delimited text. So if one used SAVE_TO_FILE() to create a file from the results and then imported it, the hard work is done.

          You might check out the Office::ExcelDocument Class for the AddSheetFromResultSet method.

            Jay, you have to use the Office::ExcelDocument as noted below. I have a pretty good example of this, multiple tabs, using sql, even some fancy fonts in the target spreadsheet. I only did this once, was hard to follow for the first time. Not in my office right now, but I think I already posted my example on this forum some time ago.

              Well, I finally resolved this with the help of the wiki, and a bit of mental elbow grease. For those of you who have been watching from the sidelines, and those who may need it in the future, here is an easy example using the Northwind database.

              function excel_export as c (e as p)

              'dim Doc as Office::ExcelDocument' (for an Excel 2007 spreadsheet) or
              dim Doc as Office::Excel2003Document '(for an Excel 2003 spreadsheet)

              dim Sheet as Office::Spreadsheet
              dim Sheet2 as Office::Spreadsheet
              DIM cn as SQL::Connection
              dim flagResult as l
              flagResult = cn.open("::Name::conn")
              if flagResult = .f. then
              ' ui_msg_box("Error","Could not connect to database. Error reported was: " + crlf() + cn.CallResult.text)
              end
              end if

              'Specify if you are using Portable SQL syntax, or not
              cn.PortableSQLEnabled = .t.

              sqlQueryStatement1 = "select * from customers"
              flagResult = cn.Execute(sqlQueryStatement1)
              Sheet= Doc.AddSheetFromResultSet(cn.ResultSet, "Customer list")

              sqlQueryStatement2 = "select * from products"
              flagResult = cn.Execute(sqlQueryStatement2)
              Sheet2=Doc.AddSheetFromResultSet(cn.ResultSet, "Product list")

              Doc.Save("c:\whateverFolderYouWant\MySheet.xls")
              'The 'e' object contains all of the data that is submitted in the Ajax callback.
              'Now, close the connection
              cn.close()

              end function
