Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Browse and underlying table on different records. How to sync ?

I haven't tested this error in v12 but last tested this application everything worked in v12 exactly the same way as V10
Browse v Table on different records.zipBrowse v Table on different records.jpg
The problem began with a browse that got confused with records when editing and duplicated odd records data. (maybe that indicated a problem already?)
So as best practice dictates - do not edit in the browse.,, I Disabled direct enter and editing.
Using Xdialog to add and edit records the strangest thing occurs - the record pointer in the table is at a different record to the browse viewing it.
When selecting a record on the browse to edit it writes to a different record in the table. Both records belong to the same correct order but the table mostly remains on the first record when selecting another on the browse.
Putting a trap in the edit to detect this confirms that this is the problem.

I attach a stripdown ADB with the one form and a few tables to demonstrate. Modified to its simplest form to replicate the problem.
If you start the db and open the only form, the browse with this issue is on the COLORS tab, as indicated as in the JPG attached.

Maybe the root cause can be found but it would suffice meantime if there was a workaround I can use. I am on a contractual beta test deadline for next week.
This is the last remaining unresolved issue (is it ever?).

CanRowChange event refers to a table that's not in the structure supporting the form. Is it possible the row never changes because this event's script is failing?

Thanks Tom. That missing table not relevant to the testing but your points made - no silver bullet
      1. this is not a simple example for casual opinion
      2. there is a fundamental problem lower down. I experienced something similar a couple of years ago with items in a quote with first record replicating. it lso involved total(... , grp->

at the time I tried to replicate that for you to look at at your suggestion (you prob wont recall) but any simple fresh example works perfectly. that one eventually resolved and has been running reliably for years but I couldnt put my finger on which variable combination stabilised it.
      Maybe I'll find out now.
Strip-down time I guess, remove "on.. events" one at a time and build back up again.

I tested Tom's theory. I put an end statement at the beginning of the CanRowChange event and then do not get the msgbox. I do get teh edit dialog and do get the correct record changed.

          Hi Tim
          Snap
I just found that too, agreed, Tom was on the button.
This is not the first time you bailed me out Tim - I will never forget the auction program in my early days with A5 you gave me a solution to changing a value, while i slept, hours before the first live auction.
          And the auction ran.
What a great group of people is this - really.

Ray, you help make it so, too, by the help you given to others here. Good luck with your project!

              Thanks Tom
I am so well on the way again now, and on schedule with this project.
I learned a lot from your observation and it explains away a cloud of mystery over why I had strange behaviour with this issue before too. Our kind of folk don't sit comfortable with unexplained behavior. I invested 2-3 hours getting a demonstration of this problem together, wondering if it was, and it was WELL worth it

              - to others out there, having spent over 12 hour messing with this problem first - it is worth the effort preparing when you ask for help. You stand a better chance to get proper attention given to the problem
