    Ken
Its 399 once for V11 or V12 desktop only - not a thousand a year - I am now using both, with complete satisfaction.
As long as your current version works, there is no need for updates.

PS: there is no place to go to replace Alpha desktop, in my opinion.

    Ken, and others,

True story. I have a one barber barbershop that wanted a web page where his clients could go and do an appointment using his calendar. He wanted this useable on Phone, tablet and any pc. We had long discussions about it because he is my own barber and very good.
Final decision, he has a website in joomla whith an "appointment" contact form. He gets an email and calls them back to either confirm or move it. Usage is about 6-8 a week by phone. He is small enough he can find out.

Facts are that more and more people are using the phones for everything. We do not realize that almost all we do on the phone is done with one app or another. nav, web, search, all of it. even the ring tones.

Our response is what? stick our heads in the sand? Watch others make Money?? Jump on board and get paid??? Remember, we get paid to do the work, not if somebody uses it.

Alpha desktop developers are not going anywhere - there's no place to go!!
There likely will not be many new desktop apps - when a user is asked (see the Alpha adds) you do want to be able to access your app from any device, don't you - what will they reply, well, of course!! Since the Alpha website doesn't eally mention the desktop anymore, new apps coming in will be Web Apps.

I think it was Dave who said - Let's not stick our heads in the sand - it the user wants to access his web app from a device, let him.

If I was maybe 25 years younger, I would go with the web. But I ain't, and I ain't going to the web.

I doubt that most Alpha users have progressed to the level of developers who are creating their apps to be used outside their own personal or business needs. So that leaves LOTS of desktop users (like me) who are developing and maintaining their apps for their own businesses - which is why we bought the program in the first place. I suspect there only a handful in the membership list who are actually making a decent living off the sale of their apps.

Of course I could be wrong ;)

Tim - that is a really kool and apt description
Mo - all things considered, I think it will be "old timers" that use the desktop

    Robin and Martin,

I am 67 and learning newer stuff all the time. I do desktop and web. I won't get rich real soon, but am working on a fairly large saas app right now the may catapult me up quite a ways.

I make enough with programming and sales to pay the bills. Is that making a living?

There are way more than a handful making a living with some type of programming that many of us on this thread know. We may not know who they are, but we know them.

    Hey Martin,

My dad was 89 when he passed away nearly 3 yrs ago. He was always trying something new on his computer. I am 68 and new technology is much too fun to give up and simply stay with a venue that is, because of technology, will be around for some years to come, but it's simply not compatible with WCD the new desktop, a whole new world would open up and I dare say, most remaining desktop users would make the switch. But unless that happens, the choice is an AA subscription or another venue. I suspect, however, nearly all other venues will be web related. Some cost less than Alpha and some cost more. Some are free for personal use. There's nothing wrong with staying with the current desktop but at some pointyou might loose customers to the new technology. Even on the beach (my favorite place in SB and SLO Counties on the California coast) the old technology is giving way to the new.

    Hi Dave,
I am curious - what with the learning curve on the 'new stuff'; at what point were you able to give up your day job and devote your time to make a living from programming? Somehow, I'm thinking you were not self-supporting when you did so?

Robin. I could have given up my day job in 1990 and done well just in programming. That is a fact. I was making about half as much as a programmer then than my regular job as a General Manager and working 1/4 the hours at it. 8 hours work, 2hrs programming and 2 hours racing cars. Racing cars cost money though.

Reality is that I loved my day job a lot and it made over 100k a year almost all the years until 2009. That year hit a wall on everything I was doing. I sit in front of a computer now for 4-12 hours a day and am rebuilding some antiquated applications to the most modern ideas out there. I will complete a couple of them this year, I think.

    meanwhile in Redmond
We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes" said CEO Satya Nadella.
and Yosemite comes to beta testing Thursday which will run across screens of all sizes.

Others have already said it about win 7 compatibility mode etc.. Let just add that once I did that on the my Windows 8.1 desktop shortcut (only once and only there), I can start my V10.5, development or runtime, from virtually everywhere you can start a program in win8.1, including double clicking on Alpha5.exe in a file manager and starting it from within a routine in another program--no hiccups at all. And I have zero problems running my apps (though I don't do anything that makes use of IE). Ya gotta know that message "Not licensed to run" Alpha put in V10 & 10.5 was nothing more than a way to get people to upgrade to V11 and beyond. Which would make me want to scream and never again give Alpha any of my money. And I have not, and will not. Easy for me to say since I have virtually stopped developing.

I wish all of you much luck.

Not sure if I'm one of the many or few but I stopped upgrading when it became clear they were never going to concentrate on making a more stable platform. Due to each version having numerous bugs and the lack of support for previous versions once a new version had been introduced just made it an unattractive option. They had me from version 7 to 11 so I guess they made some money out of me but not any more.
