Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Install package

For some reason I an unable to create a A5 install package. When I go thru the setup and press the final OK it indicates it is gathering the files etc and then I get a error message "Error in creating a script file" and the "Creating Install" runs forever until I have to force it to stop.

A5 & the RT is installed in the root directory and in the A5 settings under Directories it shows a path as: C:\Users\842 Manager\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10. What is this for?

One more thing. If I download and reinstall A5 & RT do I need to start from the original files I was given when I purchased A5 or can I download just the last version (of both) and run as a clean install.

My work computer is on a network and the IT has given me a Admin log in to download/install programs. My computer came with XP and a disc to upgrade to W7 pro and since they updated my system it seems
my problems started after this upgrade.

I have V10 installed on my home laptop which is W8.1 and did not have any problems creating the install package. I also was able to run the app and as it did with the installation of A5/RT it allowed me install using the compatibilty for W7, so it must be something wrong with my W7 machine. I did a complete reinstall and nothing changed. Is it safe to delete all A5 in the registry. Maybe this is the problem.
Any help on any of above would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jerry

    Re: Install package

    1. updates are just that so you would need to have the original installed first.
    2. when you say you installed to the root, I would assume you mean like c:\folder ???
    3. if you delete all a5 in the registry, it will be put back when you install alpha again. I would suggest a complete uninstall, delete the files you find and then a registry cleaner be run like cccleaner(free), shut down and restart, reinstall. That is if you think you need to.
    4. "C:\Users\842 Manager\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10" not sure about this path. I am very careful on installs so I never had that. I prefer everything where I want it.
    5. I happen to love win8.1 as well.

Thanks Dave, after looking at item 4 about the directory, I think, not sure, this is where A5 puts all that info you receive when you open up A5 about updates, warnings, or other messages. I will have to get permission to delete items in the registry or let the IT depart do it for me. and # 2 is in the C:\. Thanks for responding.

        Re: Install package

Jerry, you need to look at the configuration.
When building apps for deployment, it is better done on a local PC rather than a network.
Reason being that you need permission to change and create content in the package.
If it was me doing this, I'd have Dev and Rt on my machine locally. Dev in a folder outside of; the Prog files, and also the app outside of Prog files.
Servers do not like Exe builds generally.
The Roaming path has your license and registration details.
If you want to test this, mail me a app, or dump it on Dropbox. I'll build an app and put it back or let you download it from my server.

            Re: Install package

thanks Dave & Ted. Since the recent IE being exposed for letting creepy things in and the heartbleed bug our IT dept has really put the restrictions on users. They don't want us to use IE. Since I can do this at home I will probably go that route.

              Re: Install package

To test properly you will need a separate machine on a network to act as a server of sorts.
I've been experimenting with Synology DiskbStation. A very good piece of kit indeed and will run as a home server even though it is a NAS device.

Unlikely to be that easy to remove IE and install Chrome in a business with dedicated IT Dave.
