Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    From V9 - To V11 or V12???

I have not had much time or need for involvement in database work over the past few years. Sad to say because I really enjoy this stuff. However, recently have started using an old copy of A5V9 and plan on upgrading to something that is supposed to work in Windows 7. Not sure if I should go to V11 or V12. We are a desktop only user at this time which is my main concern right now and will be going to a small networked group of users - 2 or 3 in the short term. I would greatly appreciate hearing from some of you fellow users on your thoughts, experience, and opinion on moving up from an older version - should I go to V11 or V12?

Thanks in advance for your time and input.

    All the best,
    Mike
    Thank you,

Mike, why move to V12 or V11?
Either will work on Win7. And so will V9.

Emails using v8 and win7 seems it may be an issue. Just have heard this. Not tried it yet and probably won't since I don't use v8 anymore.

I moved my app from v7 to v9 with no major issues, v7 to 10 with no major issues, same with v11. I will try it with v12 in another week or so, just to be sure. All of the issues were stuff done in v5 and back that worked fine in v7, but needed redoing for v9,v10,v11.

          Ted Giles-
When I installed V9 on my current laptop, I was able to email pdf version of reports. Noticed that it wasn't the latest version of V9, I upgraded. Email no longer works in V9's latest release/patch.

          DaveM-
I can confirm that emailing from V9 in latest release does not work. Used to in originally installed version of V9.

          Thanks,

Then the word is your oyster as they say.
V12 if you need IE or Chrome.
V11 won't handle IE very well.

I have Version 9, Build 2095, System Addins: Build 3264. Are you saying that emailing works on your version?

Yep, same version here too, SP1. Emailing worked until I moved up to the latest ver/build. I do recall that it took some time to get it to work in the first place, then nothing after upgrade.

                    Thanks for sharing!

Mike, is the error an MAPI error?
I get this with Windows Live Mail but not with Outlook.
The built in AS client still works fine in the latest build.

Not at computer now and will check exact error later when I'm back at my computer. Something about not being able to log on to smtp serve. FWIW, I was never able to send via outlook and only with A5's email client. Worked well.

I have heard that emailing world better in A5 versions 10, 11, etc. Can anybody offer any experience with this?

                        Thanks.
                        Thank you,

Failure message is, "Could not connect to SMTP Server: smtp.xxxxxxx.xxxxx.com. Worked well until I moved up to latest version of V9, which is when I read of some issues with this and that V10 and V11 email works fine.

                              Ted-
I just downgraded from V9 2095_3264 to the prior version I had on my machine, 1772_3208. A5 is now emailing, though only with it's built in client.

Still interested in thoughts on going to V11 or V12 from current V11/V12 users.
