Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Getting error on Self-Signed Certificate using Latest FireFox 31.0

I am using latest stable version of Alpha Anywhere 2.0 (i.e. 2128_4292) and SSL with a self-signed certificate.
I recently upgraded my Firefox browser to v31.0.
Since upgrade to latest Firefox I am now getting the following sec_error_extension_value_invalid error :

Has anyone else encountered this problem ?

Yes, I have the same thing going on. Switched over to Chrome to get around it. I've searched for a solution but haven't found one yet.

I rolled Firefox back to release 30.0 and set it to only apply updates if I tell it to in order to fix the problem in the meantime. My users needed all their bookmarks, saved passwords, etc.

Same problem as well. I went through all of the SSL settings in Firefox to see if any one option could have caused the problem but no dice. This is the error message that Chrome provides when accessing a secure site with a self-signed certificate. Maybe it will help.

Hello All! Here is a follow-up to the SSL error that you may be receiving in Firefox ver. 31. This is a workaround but does work! You can use your own self-signed certificate instead of using the built-in feature to create one. You will need a copy of OpenSSL installed on your computer to generate your own Certificate and Private Key file. The one I used i got from here: http://slproweb.com/products/Win32OpenSSL.html.

Once you have installed OpenSSL, open up a command prompt and navigate to c:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin (or whatever folder you installed it to). Type the following command:

            openssl req -x509 -days 365 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout AlphaDev.key -out AlphaDev.crt

You will be prompted to enter a password and verify it. You will also need to input a few details like Country name, State, Locality, Organization Name, Organization Unit, Common Name and Email Address. This will create a certificate file and private key in the folder. You can copy these to a folder of your choice or leave them.

Open up your Alpha Developer and access the Web Application Server. Under the SSL tab, select your new certificate and key file and enter the password used when creating the certificate. Save and restart the server. When you open up your site in Firefox, you should get the option to proceed and add the site as an exception.

Some notes: You may want to extend the number of days to something more than a year. I use 3650 to get about 10 years!

            Good luck!

Thank you ValuMike, will do this.

So I am now thinking, does Alpha need to make an update or is the problem with the latest Firefox release ?

Not sure, I may be bringing up a different issue, but I thought Firefox always balked on self-signed certificates?

Because a "self-signed" certificate the cert is not from a recognized issuer (GeoTrust, GoDaddy, etc.), Firefox rejects access and you have to create an "Exception" under the Tools > Options > Security tab. Chrome and IE do not block, but show a different color and icon in the browser to display its displeasure with the certificate.

                  Steve,

That is correct. If you look at the image that gilbertro posted, Firefox (version 31) was not even giving you an option to add the exception. I was also not able to manually add the exception. I am not sure what the problem is but my hunch has to do with the way Alpha creates the self-signed cert.

The latest pre-release has a change in it to accommodate the changed Firefox made.

To get the pre-release build go to help/view release notes. 3rd paragraph has a link to the pre-release notes.

Please note that you will need to regenerate your self-signed certificate and install it on your server to address this issue.

Certificate extensions are no longer generated into self-signed certificates when using the Application or Development Server Settings dialog to generate a self-signed certificate or calling directly from INET::SSLContext::CreateTestCertificate(). Version 31 of Firefox no longer appears to accept the deprecated certificate extensions and this change corrects that problem.

Because a self-signed certificate is untrusted by browsers, you will need to accept the certificate by navigating the respective dialog for your browser.

Self-signed certificates are intended for testing and not to secure your application. Because they are untrusted, they can be spoofed more easily. It is always a good investment to purchase a certificate for a production application.
