Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dynamically populate fields into a list control

Basically the user can select which fields to display in the UX. They can save new records based upon a dynamic selection of fields. This works now using xbasic & JS. But what I don't have a good grasp on is how to display those selected fields in a list control. Currently the user gets to select up to 14 fields in any order on either of 2 panels. Again this works now. In future versions they may get to select any number of fields from the table. What might the best way to get that populated into a list - using the fields they selected in the order that they specify?

Re: Dynamically populate fields into a list control

    Peter,
I'm working on the same type of problem - configuring a LIST on a UX with dynamically changing number of columns. I have a set number of columns the user can choose from (5,7,10,14 or 20), so I was considering if the "Has multiple layouts" option is what I should use and just setup Layouts for them? I have not spent any time on that particular problem yet. Have you found a way?

Here's what I have got planned so far: A LIST on a UX to display columns from a PIVOT type query. Records are sorted by date columns across the page and sorted by category going down the page. The headings for 20 columns would be too long to fit across the page. I'm just making the column headings static like a spreadsheet, "A", "B", "C", etc. and including a legend in a separate LIST going down the left-side of the form. When the user clicks a row in the legend I would like to be able to highlight the corresponding column in the main LIST. The number of characters in each cell is typically just one or two characters, but in some cases the user may have four or five characters. The SQL uses an "AS" clause for all the selected columns. The returned column names are always the same, like "C01", "C02", "C03".

Hi Rich. I think I have a solution (thanks to Francie). Once I try it out I'll report back here.

The multiple layouts option works if you only need certain static layouts. I need 100% dynamic ones. Although i think in my case column width will be an issue too. We'll see.

Peter, did you come up with a way to have dynamic columns in your LIST?

          Hi Rich,

Sorry, I forgot about this thread. Yes, we can dynamically populate columns & set their headings. But there have been all kind of snags along the way. For one thing, the list refresh seems to delete state variables. So I had to switch to session variables. But anyway, I'll try to respond better tomorrow.

            Peter,
I wonder if the thing you saw about missing state variables is related or similar to what I saw in a grid? When a grid is opened a second time, it fires the conditional column styling code for the first row in the data at a point prior to initializing the state variable object. My conditional styles use JavaScript code which need the state variables. It was necessary to put error checking into the functions to just bail out if the needed state variable(s) do not exist. Otherwise, the grid would not load properly the second time as the JS gets stopped in its tracks trying to do stuff with non-existent variables. The A5 library fires the conditional styling for that first a row a second time after the state variable object has been initialized and all works okay. I will send you a private message with more details incase your situation is similar. If the situation is the same then maybe you could submit a bug report to go along with mine.

                Hi Mike,

The solution is extremely complex, although I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if I had a very simple example w. a few fields. But look for my PM.
