Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Latest Patch: Development Server License Issue

    OK, I'll be the first.

I patched my development environment up to the latest build, opened it up and started the App Server, got the message below:

    2014-09-09_16-26-38.png

On the other hand, "Help->About" shows:

    2014-09-09_16-29-15.png

Anyone else or does Alpha just not like me?

The 5 sessions aren't bothering me right now but I don't like to be told I don't have a license. :)

I'd prefer the message to do anything else than come up every time I open Alpha.

I installed the patch and my WAS failed to fully open after restarting the computer. It would hang up at about 40% open. I had to roll back to last official release to get the thing running again. The license is good for another year so its not that.

            The message is correct.

You have a license for the Development Version. You likely do not have a license for the server in the Development Version and therefore the Development Server will be limited to 5 sessions.

When you start the Application Server in the Development environment (this has now been renamed the 'Development Server' to emphasized the point that this server is intended for testing an app while you are in development mode and NOT for hosting a deployed application), the message is shown to remind you that you have not entered a server license for you Development Server and therefore you are limited to 5 sessions while testing.

For hosting deployed applications you use the stand alone Application Server. This has always been the case and there is no change here.

If you want to purchase a separate application server license for use in your development machine, then you can certainly do so, and then when you start the Development Server, you will not get the message because the development server will no longer be limited to 5 sessions.

However there is no compelling reason to purchase a license for the development server so that you can have more than 5 sessions because the development server is only intended for testing while you are developing an application and the 5 session limit is rarely ever an issue. If you hit the 5 session limit while developing and testing a component, you can always just stop and restart the development server.

I want to emphasize that there has been NO CHANGE in behavior here. The development server was ALWAYS limited to 5 sessions if you were running it without a license. The only difference is that now we tell you this when you start the development server.

I also want to emphasize that the license you enter for your development version (not the server, but the version of Alpha Anywhere that you use to BUILD your application - i.e. the so called 'IDE') is NOT the same as a server license.

This is the error I get. I updated, again, to the v3 thinking maybe I did something wrong and now my development environment is no longer working...

(I see now that the first post is not the same problem as mine. Didn't actually read it just assumed it was the same issue)

                Selwyn:

I'll take your word for it (it's your company, you get to define the terms), to me it's a distinction without a difference, all that's happened is we're now being told we don't get a free Application Server when we buy the development environment. That's fine, I don't intend to surreptitiously host an application using the development environment, I just need for that environment to work.

                Thanks for the response.

Re: Latest Patch: Development Server License Issue

The application server in the development program has always been restricted to 5 sessions (demo mode), unless it has a server license installed. There is no change in behavior, just a new informational message to tell you the sessions are limited. Previously, you would only get a message on a web page if you tried to start more than 5 sessions.

Re: Latest Patch: Development Server License Issue

Mike and Reed had a different issue. Their subscription was showing up as expired, which did not allow them to use the newer release. This was an error in our subscription information and has been fixed. They are now able to use the software.

Additionally, Mike shows a broken link, which has now been corrected.

                      Hi Lenny,

I am having the same problem now. I just updated to the latest patch and after that nothing seems to work. I am still fairly new to Alpha. My license is valid until Apr 2015. But, I think I may not have all the right. It does not let me save any of my changes anymore.

                      Thanks,

So, Alpha added another box I have to click through every time I use Alpha? I already have to click "OK" when the server stops running . Now I have to click "OK" when it starts running? I don't want to click this message 5x a day - or more (crashy crashy). What is the reasoning for showing this message? Trying prevent people from accidentally spawning 5 instances in testing? They're still going to see the website warning, aren't they? How does the warning help in this case? Is there an issue with people using the development version for production? If someone is trying to cheat and get away without buying a server license, a warning popup is not going to stop them. Why am I subject to a warning every time I open Alpha (a warning? This be an Information message. I don't want to see it either way!) It's written into the definition of the development environment that it's limited to 5 licenses. The Development Server settings indicates this already! This message is useless.

Developing Alpha used to be more seamless than this. I could launch, build, test, deploy local test, and publish to production without being bothered about "type of live preview" or warnings about server capabilities. Now I have to click through a popup about starting the development server, stopping the development server, debugging in Live Preview (sometimes TWO! So many angsts!) These boxy barriers to development are aggravating.
