Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Displaying multiline strings retrieved from SQL Server

I am attempting to display a multiline message onto a label that is pulled from a SQL query, though it does not work as expected. If the message is on a single line, it displays just fine. However, as soon as the message is on multiple lines, it will not display at all. Here is some Xbasic that is executed onLogin.
    Code:
    'Load the landing page message
sqlCommand = "SELECT message FROM messagetest"
    cn.Execute(sqlCommand)
    rs = cn.ResultSet
    session.landingmessage = rs.Data("message")
and then I assign the value of the label to "session.landingmessage"

This method works elsewhere in my project, though the other bits of text are NOT multiline, so there is no issue.

Have you tried making your message multi lines after you get it from SQL? This is line1 <br> this is line2

Do you mean modify the string once I have set it to the session variable? I'm not sure how to best go about that. I could see substr being a possible solution, but I'm not too adept with it.

        Devin,
Can you post an example of what session.landingmessage looks like from the debug window when a multi-line message is involved?

When you say the message is "multi-line", what do you mean? Do you mean that there are Carriage Returns/Line Feeds in there or is it just so much data that it needs to show on a new line?

How are you trying to display the data? You are assigning it to a session variable, then assigning it to a lable?

Is that lable in a grid or a dialogue component?

Is the problem really that it has multiple lines or is there some data in the longer messages (maybe with single quotes or other symbols) that could be mucking it up?

Some real life examples of the data might be useful.

I'm not sure how to track a session variable like that.

I am saving this record by allowing the user to enter in data into a text area which then gets saved to the DB with a submit button. If the user presses the return key in order to start a new line while in the text area, it causes the problem. During the login process the session variable is fetched from the database, and then a label's value on the landing page is set to the session variable just mentioned. The label is also in a UX component.

            Examples:

            Working -
            Test

            Not working -
            Test
            New line

              Hi Devin,
Probably you need to use the js_escape(MyToolTipValue) before assigning it to your label.
              Ex: myLabelTitleValue = js_escape(MySessionVar)

Thank you for your reply. This solution half-way worked. When using js_escape(), my multiline string turns into a single line with "\n" at all of the line breaks. I tried to modify the variable even more with js_escape(STRTRAN(session.landingmessage, "\n", "<br />")), though that did not work. It confuses me because js_escape(STRTRAN(session.landingmessage, "test", "best")) WILL work if the word test is in the string, but it doesn't want to touch the "\n". Anybody have a suggestion for this?

One: Put the strtran in front of the js_escape.
Two: Alpha sees the \ as an escape character itself. Try this:

                  STRTRAN(js_escape(session.landingmessage, "\\n", "<br />")),

Not sure it will work that way, but worth a try....

Your answer was close! STRTRAN(js_escape(session.landingmessage), "\n", "<br />") worked great.
