Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

    I would like some guidance on showing and hiding particular fields in my grid based on the custom search button that the user clicks on.

    In my example, I have several columns that need to appear in the grid normally but, if I click on the search button to select only denied loans, I would need to show some columns relevant to a denied loan and hide the columns that aren't applicable to a denied loan.

    Try the following javascript. Depending on what you are doing on the button, you may need this as the return of a function, or you can just put the javascript directly into the button.

    {grid.Object}.showGridColumn('MYFIELD1',false);
    {grid.Object}.showGridColumn('MYFIELD2',true);

    The fields names must be in caps.

      I really am not building buttons, it appears that Alpha is doing this behind the scenes in this particular area of the grid building process. The code which creates the button is
      Code:
      Denials = denial_date IS NOT NULL AND denial_date <> 0000-00-00
      It's basically just the sql filter construct. I'm not quite sure where I would place your javascript here.

        I do not know how you built the button.
        here is how to do:
        the definition should be

        buttonText = search expression, so in your case
        Denials = {searchField} iS_NOT_NULL AND {searchField} <> 0000-00-00 ( I would think, is not null, should be enough)
        then the next line where it says search field you insert denial_date

        if you did this and still had error, I do not know.
        if it did not work post back I will test on a dummy grid and let you know.

          Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

          I have not used that particular feature in V12 yet-so I'm not certain. But for every action, there is a client side or a server side event which is fired. The javascript would go in the appropriate event. Inside the event you can likely tell which button was pressed. I'll look into it more when I get a chance, but that would be the basic idea. Anyone know the event specifics for the custom search feature in V12?

            What am I missing in building this function? Through examining the button in Firebug, my button that should trigger the column show/hide is {grid.Object}.alphabetSearch(8))
            When I do a working preview with the function below, I get Line 19, Char 3, Syntax error.

            I have Client-side Events:onGridRenderComplete:showHideColumns();

            Code:
            function showHideColumns(){

              Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

              George,

              Your JS function should be defined in the JS function area of the grid, not in the event. You can then call the function in the client side event. Since you are using "Alphabet" functionality, you may need to use client-side search events to trigger the function after the user clicks a button.

                    I am using single quotes around the field names. You are showing double quotes. Not sure if that's a problem or not.

                      in addition to missing the second "=" I don't see the opening { after the if statement

                      and closing } after all the statements.

                            You need a { after the if:

                            if (denialbutton == {grid.Object}.alphabetSearch(8))
                            {
                            {grid.Object}.showGridColumn("TENTCLOSING",false);

                            And then you'll probably need to remove one from the top.

                              Should I include an end if because the grid keeps rotating among different record counts like it's in a loop.
