Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Not sure what you are talking about. Is the grid cycling over and over?

    Maybe ongridrendercomplete isn't the best client side event to use. At that point, the grid rendering is done. That event is more for making substitutions to the finished grid.

    You maybe should try the script in an earlier event, such as aftersearchsubmit, cansearch submit or ongridrender.

      I am not able to follow the logic, please help. in your first post you said that there is a search button (this is a custom/alphabet button) and when the user clicks
      but now you have changed the logic to afterGridRenderComplete which will not require the button to be pressed. where is the value for the button coming in?

        Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

        Thank you guys for your time and helping me, I really appreciate it.
        Gandhi, I don't know if v11 (in your signature), has this feature but, I am using v12 and it has the option in grid properties where I can create the Alphabetic or custom buttons. I chose to create the custom style buttons. I named the buttons relative to the sql filter that they would return to the grid. Since there isn't any show/hide expression options in that area of the grid properties 'Alphabet buttons/Custom buttons search', I have to turn to the javascript functions and client-side events to accomplish my show/hide of columns.
        Illustrated in my first post and image in this thread, I simply need to hide several irrelevant fields if the user clicks on the Denials button and then show those hidden fields should the user click on any of the other buttons. An actual loan proceeding through underwriting will have values in several of my columns.
        A loan that is being denied will not have an appraisal date, flood determination date, legal ordered date, etc. and I just need to hide those columns unless any other button besides Denials is chosen.

        Here is the sql that gets executed behind my buttons. Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 8.43.28 PM.png

          yes I have he same button/custom button
          and I can give the same name
          and as I mentioned on my earlier post, look at post #4 ,the button needs more information
          there is a place to put the info then it should work, is that not the case?

              Not sure if you saw my post (#16)

              I think you need to move the function to a different event:

              You maybe should try the script in an earlier event, such as aftersearchsubmit, cansearchsubmit or ongridrender.

                Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

                or a different button than a search button, like action button called denial and onClick does all the stuff and can be placed above the grid
                if all the button are aimed at the same logic then many action button can be created

                    Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

                    I didn't have time to do a full test, but I know the right client side event now. (I actually went in and played around with it instead of making assumptions.

                    The events that fire are CanAlphabetButtonSearch and AfterAlphabetButtonSearch. (Try putting alert('test'); into those events and you will see that they fire.)

                    But if it's still not working, I think the next issue might be with your variable assignments and comparisons. Don't know how that works exactly but it looks like you are assigning it to one value, then comparing it to another value that, from the code, looks like it should be completely different - but I don't know.

                    It looks more like you should be doing something like:

                    var denialbutton = {grid.Object}.alphabetSearch();
                    if (denialbutton == 'grid.Obj1.nameofbutton')

                    or something like that. But I couldn't get the alert to work with it to show me what the values were supposed to be.

                    I didn't go so far as to create a script similar to yours and try it out - ran out of time!

                      Re: show/hide columns based on custom search button selection

                      take a look at this screencast.
                      http://screencast.com/t/AAC2NGvfc
                      I took a different route, since custom or alphabet buttons are search buttons they search on the row.
                      since you want to work with columns showing or hiding I took this route.
                      see if this is satisfactory to you.
                      when you design the button hiding one column and the unhiding all other that were hidden by other button will make this very functional.

                      edit:

                      this does not filter the rows, just hides the columns
                      if you want both filter the grid rows and hide column then little bit more work needed.

                            The show/hide columns code is working well. When I introduce the second inline javascript code below, I receive an error. I can't find an example of how to construct the sql type filter in gridFilterSet. I have searched the forum, documentation and video sections.

                            I've tried:
                            {grid.object}.gridFilterSet('DENIAL_DATE IS NOT NULL',,);
                            and {grid.object}.gridFilterSet('DENIAL_DATE IS NOT NULL');

                              do not have time to test now:
                              but try

                                I thought that the method's instructions said that you just input your sql code?
