Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What is needed from day one

    Hi All

we are currently looking at this produce to get us started to develop App for a large "company"

we would be building App's like" list of client / details" - allowing the user to update and sync etc etc

    so what is needed ?

licence for each developer, (one of cost or yearly)
in MS world you can use Team foundation where we can check out projects etc is this possible in alpha
do we need a new server to use as a middleware between app and main DB?
sure there will be a few more questions
any advice would be most helpful

    Regards
    Tony

Re: What is needed from day one

I am not the final authority on alpha's mobile. There are others here that can answer you better.
I do know you will need a subscription for each seat working on the project. I would contact alpha sales for a possible discount for purchasing a number of seats as they may negotiate a bit for multiples.
For mobile, it does need to be web based either on a server space you rent or on your own server. There are many places like Smarterasp that do windows based servers.
You could opt for cloud based if you will have a large number of users.
To my knowledge, there is no team work platform built in so coordination between seats is a must. That can be had by doing a google search or just good solid planning(the old way with word or the like).

There is much help available here and IADN has some tools available that could be useful as you go along.

        Hope I helped a little.

Re: What is needed from day one

          Hi David

and thank you for replying :)
So each of our developer has a licence and have to have a good system to store projects on a "common" server -(that of course is getting back-upped)
server (Application) used for being the middle man between App on ipad for example and main DB
          see (http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...DetailView.htm (Alpha Anywhere Method))

Air watch (Already have in the company) to manage the apps

I work for the NHS and as you can imagine the idea of having patient data on devices are ringing alarm bells for a number of people :(
anyone got good info / idea on how you could demo this is not a real worry as much as they think it is ..

          many Thanks

Re: What is needed from day one

I built a mobile COPD application for the NHS, and have done a lot of work on secure data,
Overcoming the data access fears is not easy.
            The options you have are;
Store the data on a server and provide access to it from a device.
Download data for a specific patient or patients when on visits. This works when there is no server access, and it prevents anyone else updating the record as you lock the ones being used off site.
Have the usual form of synchronisation when no access is available. This is the one they will question, and it is data accessibility rather than the data itself. Using encryption, you can scramble the data very well indeed. Timeouts on screens will help. Double layer of login and regular enforced pwd changs also helps.
If it of any interest, I got a specialist to try and decrypt an Alpha app. It took more than 2 days, but that was 4 years ago.

Suggest you create a simple app and show them the roadblocks to unauthorised data access.

What is the particular NHS discipline?

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

              Thank you Ted

Yep you will know the resistance we are going to feel... :(
at the moment we are just looking into what sort of toolkit we need to build these apps
like you say for in hospital only sernerio to nurses visiting patient way out in the sticks where they have dial up connections

we have a couple in mind and this is one of them ..

been looking at the tutorials video and following them and am impressed but also having the flexable to do your own coding as well
In your view would you say its a good option to start with or what

Regards and thank for taking the time to comment

Re: What is needed from day one

Tony, what sort of processes will the apps be handling?
If there are critical app requiring meds and contraindications or access to the Formulary that is a whole lot different to PAS or booking.

Depending on how technical you are and if you will be collaborating in development, will dictate the tools you use. Alpha is at the simple level a really easy to use application builder. You will get stuff working pretty quickly.
At the complex level using the code framework you can do most things.

The trade off is the time to create all singing, all dancing drag and drop apps, or stuff that works almost out of the box.

If you care to share the scope privately, my details are at the bottom and I'm happy to share experiences regarding Alpha with you.
