Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

My 1st Grid Component on the Desktop

I created a dbf based updateable grid component and tested it in working preview - all is well. I then went to Action Scripting to create an XD to display it and while it previewed Ok, the dialog shows nothing. Here is the error:

    Now what?

A peek at the XB revealed that the AS expected a variable dlg_title to hold the XD dialog title. So I converted the AS to a UDF and added the variable. I am hoping that the script that calls this function will pause until the modal dialog closes...to be continued.

Re: My 1st Grid Component on the Desktop

Ok, now I am hooked! What I needed in my script, was for it to pause as an option for the user to change some records before setting a crlf() list with the table values. Calling up a browse or form was much more complicated and apparently not doable in an XD without the grid component, since the only way to get an editable browse view in an XD was by using a grid.

Now I am wondering what others are doing with web components on the desktop that surpasses what they might have done using only the conventional desktop tools. Anybody?

Why wont a browse converted into an XD work for you?
        Much simpler.
By adding buttons using code can perform additional Xbasic functions.

          Hi Ray,
Because I couldn't figure out how to do it and have it update the table.

Re: My 1st Grid Component on the Desktop

            These are the basic steps
Open the browse you want, for now impose no restrictions (allow editing)
from menu bar Browse | Design Mode
            then
Browse | Advanced |Create Xdialog |Run the script

There is your browse in XD no difference to the browse itself except the ops buttons are encapsulated below not on a window bar. Edits are saved.
Save the code and run the script

              Thanks Ray,
That worked really well. I guess I never noticed that option was available. The grid component is nice too, but 'just the browse' was what I needed in modal form.

Robin, if you intend to continue with grids etc. please KIV that V11 with IE9 or higher don't play nicely with web components on the desktop.

                  Robin,

I have exactly same as your problem - post #1.

                  I converted to xBasic, added

                  Code:
                  " dlg_title ="Grid Sample"
                  " before start Box code

                  Code:
                   varC_result = ui_dlg_box(dlg_title,<<%dlg%
                  then it works fine.

It is painful work, created with AS then convert xBasic with change the code again...

Does A5V11 provide any Grid templates? If it does, where can I find this Grid Template?

                        Question for Ray,
I have made a couple of functions now for different XD browses, and was wondering if you have any screen shots/ examples of ones you made where you added other elements to the XD? I'm thinking a search box would be nice...and could be placed in the dlg_body before the browse_card.

Re: My 1st Grid Component on the Desktop

                          Interesting question.
I have only added the odd buttons for additional functionality. Haven't gone as far advanced as you indicate.
A simple example I worked out to try, hijacking the Find by Key button to save adding another right now.
Maybe my sample is a little too simplistic for you. Just showing how to call another dialog to enter a search term and finding that.
I'd love to learn more and try over time and happy to see what you find.
I replaced the simple find() call with
                          Code:
                          else if a_dlg_button = "browseObj1_FindByKey" then
                          	a_dlg_button = ""
                          	[COLOR="#0000FF"]srchtxt=ui_get_text("FIND", "look for Code")
                          	browseObj1.command("SORT_ASCENDING")
                          	browseObj1.Find(srchtxt)
                          [/COLOR]
doing a search in Dialog browse.zip
Anyone interested can follow the working example in the attached with their browser, unzip the HTM file from the zip.

                            Thanks Ray,
Sometimes I am so dense! I made my browses without the extra buttons and then forgot I could add them...duh
I was thinking of doing something else on a larger file, but the Find box is probably sufficient.

                            Nice little presentation, btw!

I keep the original browse, add features to it, generate the code, and then replace portions of it in the xdialog.

I suppose if I got ambitious, I'd make a function that would apply the changes needed to the generated code.

                              Maybe later.
