Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to assign value to session variable in javascript client side event

    Hello everyone!

This should be relatively simple but I haven't been able to figure it out despite searching wiki and message board and trying MANY things.....I'm sure I'm overlooking something stupid or perhaps I'm going about it the wrong way. I'm still a newbie at this:

In GRID PROPERTIES I have PUBLISH SESSION VARIABLE set to SESSION.QS_VAL. I did this because I want the session variable available in both server and client side events.

    In OnGridInitialize event I initialize SESSION.QS_VAL = "30"

I have a QuickSearch on my grid and I store the value selected in the QuickSearch in the OnGridRender event as follows:
    var val = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.QUICKSEARCH').value;

I set an alert to confirm that val is being set correctly to the selected value. Now I need to take val and store it in SESSION.QS_VAL but using assignment statement in the client side event (like SESSION.QS_VAL = val;) causes an error "session is undefined". How do I do this?

I probably should mention, the whole reason I'm using the session variable is because I need to use it in the Query (AlphaDAO) Filter so that the grid gets filtered accordingly. In other words, it needs to display 30, 60, or 90 days of data depending on what the user selected in QuickSearch dropdown.

      I think it's {grid.object}._vars.SESSION.QS_VAL. See here: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...lient+Side+V11

You're welcome! I double-checked the Grid Help instructions in the "Publish Session Variable" after I posted and it says "SESSION.BLAHBLAHBLAH = myval" right there, but that throws an error. So I'm a tad confused about where alpha is keeping the setting info. I'm also curious if you can even set the session variable client-side or if it's a one-way street. Did it work?

Re: How to assign value to session variable in javascript client side event

I am confused about the whole stuff, the session variable is initiated by the server, in this case WAS and you assign a session variable at server. Publishing that variable is available to grid or dialog to use it. If so,
How is it possible to publish to the client a session variable with a value?
My impression is you assign a session variable at the server, and dialogInitiate event checks the server and copies so called published session variable and uses it.
So assigning a value of 30 is not what I thought possible, but you can publish var session.thirtyDays which will copy 30 from server.
Am I making sense or I am in the far away planet?
I think the proper nomenclature would be import session variable than publish, when normally we think of publish from us to the server, or at least I.
            thanks for reading

Re: How to assign value to session variable in javascript client side event

Thanks Sarah and Govindan for your input. I've had to move on to another higher priority item, but Sarah, the line of code you provided did get me what I was looking for but I didn't get to test it and make sure the value was available client side.

Govidan, I needed to be able to "grab" the value selected which was available client side and then use it server side but again, I didn't get to finish testing this yet so I'm not sure if everything will work as I expected.

              Thanks again.
