Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    spell check dictionary and use

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    I hope someone else know how to manipulate the alpha spell checker.

    Adding a word that is close to the misspelling never shows up. The buttons on the right are grayed out. See image?

    Is there a file I am missing somewhere. I am currently in the developer. Have not tried it with runtime so far.

    edit: seems to work on all files except rtfmemo. When the error is in that type field is where the problems arise, especially with names.

    Words added to the spell checker should be found stored in

    C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\<Alpha version name>

    in the

    user_dict.txt file.
    There can be only one.

      Dave, perhaps you can grab the text property of the rtf string and store that in the spell checker text file. I'll be surprised if you can store binary RTF data in a TXT file.

        Thanks Stan.

        It does store the words there that are added, but does not check it on spell check and that is after restarting all including a computer restart.

        Tom, Thank you. I already did that to no avail. The rtf text goes in ok, but see answer to Stan.

        Other part is the buttons on the right get grayed out or I could add to the alpha file and not the secondary file.

          Re: spell check dictionary and use

          Here, on V11, you can manually add words to the user_dict (wordpad) and they are used to check an rtf memo field if the spell checker is invoked.

          Looks like the rtf toolbar has a separate spell checker for rtf fields.

              Re: spell check dictionary and use

              Just a heads up, folks... I know Dave's issue may be resolved, but I just ran into a similar issue this past week.

              I found that there seems to be a limit in either the number of words, or the number of characters, that can be added in the user_dict.txt file. Well, not in the file itself, but in how far down Alpha reads the file. After a certain point (I can check if desired), Alpha stops reading the words that are added. (Version 12 - Anywhere 3)

              I discovered the limits when I tried to add a significant list of industry specific terms to the existing system. Searches on the board also echo my observations.

              I ended up building a modernized version for our software. It's not 100% done, but functional. I have not addressed memo fields, since I only use them sparingly. I don't see an easy way to remove/replace the existing ABC button, there.

              (I think the Alpha team might better have better used a table for added words, as they do with the Speed Glossary. The internal system would be fine if this was done, although the interface is dated looking.)

              You can probably extend the capabilities of the existing system, and use a table for new words. (Still an issue with memo fields...) For the Internal functions, go to the Interactive Window and type:

              ?spellchecker.

              You can use Soundex() and variants for building logic. My original intention was to give a face lift to the existing system, but being that the desktop gets little attention from Team Alpha these days, I accepted the challenge of a rebuild to avoid future challenges.

              If building your own, look at ActiveDrilldown() and variants. The variants come into play with an embedded browse versus parent fields, and also where you place the button for the trigger; on a toolbar, or on the form. Use .type() to avoid numeric fields, and the like. I had already created an on screen keyboard, so a complete rebuild was easier for me.

              Word lists are available on the web, but that was a couple good hours to import and clean up the data.

              I used a HTML text box so I could highlight the misspelled word. I'll probably re-engineer the on screen keyboard to use an HTML box in the window onit so I can highlight a misspelled word as the user types. Well, maybe not. It depends on time.

              I hope this helps the next person that runs into this. As time goes by, it seems the internal Spell Check will become less and less functional as more and more words need to be added year after year. The existing system doesn't recognize Google as a word, so it's already very dated.

                Re: spell check dictionary and use

                The issue was resolved as far as how to do this thanks mostly to tom. You have to get the text into a text string where you can spell check it, then blank the rtfmemo field and then put the corrected text back in. There may be more efficient ways to do this, but this worked.

                Code:
                 DIM shared thisfilenum AS c
                thisfilenum = parentform:Filenum.value
                dim thetext as c
                dim t as P
                dim fname as c = "chimcom"
                dim shared newtext as c
                dim ti as P

                t = table.get("chimney")
                query.filter = "file_num = var->thisfilenum"
                query.options = "D"
                qry = t.query_create()

                thetext = RTF_FIELD_TO_TEXT(var->fname)
                parentform.commit()
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------
                 clear the rtf memo field of current text

                tbl = table.get("pool")
                 fld = tbl.field_get("comments")
                tbl.change_begin()
                 tbl.field_blank("comments")
                tbl.change_end(.t.)
                 parentform.resynch()

                't.comments.value = ""
                ti = A5_SPELLCHECKSTRING(var->thetext,"text","rtf",.t.)

                var->newtext = ti.text

                '--------------------------------------------------------
                Replace the deleted text with the text that was spell checked

                end if

                ' remember to clear the query
                Maybe it will help someone else.
