Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated Field Expression Help

I placed the following in the calculated field expression on my UX "Right(DTOC(Start_Date),4)" but this doesnt work. Then I tried "Right(Start_Date,4)" and this returned a strange result, I got "ime)" instead of the last four digits of the Start_Date date.

Long story short, I want this calculation to return only the Year portion of a date field that has a mask of MM/DD/YYYY. The expression above works in desktop application but Im assuming (since I got a strange result) that its not for the web apps.

    Thank you in advanced.

EDIT: Im trying to put this in a UX Component in the Client Side Properties>Calculated Field Expression.

      Re: Calculated Field Expression Help

Oh yes, my apologies, Start_Date is a date field with a mask of MM/DD/YYY, I am trying to place this in Client Side Properties->Calculated Field Expression.

EDIT: The calculation you gave me did not work. upon removing the right() and simply leaving the Start_Date, I get the following result: Sun Jan 12 2014 00:00:00 GMT-0800 (Pacific Standard Time)

So now I see why I get "ime)" when I enter the right(start,4) expression.

if start_date is date why it is showing time also? and why you need a mask?

Ivan, check the help file discussion of the DTOC() function. You may need to include a format string for the return value from the function.

You are using Xbasic (server side language) in a client side property. You need to extract the portion you want using javascript, not Xbasic.

              Why don't you use year(Start_Date)?

I dont know why Start_Date is showing time if the field itself only shows date, the only reason for the mask is so that the user does not have to enter the slashes in MM/DD/YYY.

                  Re: Calculated Field Expression Help

I do not know why it shows time also unless you have defined as time field,
how ever if you do not want users to type in the slashes you define in the date/time picker properties has mask check that and the when it reformates the popup define the mask characters to 00/00/0000 rather than defining your mask in the format area

am I able to add this to the afterDialogValidate expression? I feel doing it this way can fix what Im trying to accomplish here, just need to get the syntax right.

                      "e.dataSubmitted.YEAR = Year(Start_Date)"

                        Re: Calculated Field Expression Help

I would not name a field as YEAR, maybe myYear or something. That is a reserved word used in functions so that could cause an issue. In your image of your table definitions what is a year field data type? I can't find any info on that. I would just use an integer(4) field data type. The year() function returns numeric data.

Also why are you storing the year in the table? You always have it available in a query.

Mainly because I havent had any formal training and Im learning as I go, the DBA here quit so I got forced into doing this. After this thread I now realize that storing this info in a table is not necessary. On the desktop I was using the "year" field to filter my report, but I could have easily created an argument that used YEAR(Start_Date) which I will now be using.
