Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why must I "Pre-Load" data in child lists?

In a list with a detail section, for editing, why must I "Pre-Load" data in child lists?
This is no a disconnected data application.

Is there a way simply to "Save" changes from a detail section.
When I turn on Pre Load, and link the grids, the builder breaks the code.

Re: Why must I "Pre-Load" data in child lists?

According to the help dialog when you select the pre-load data property it indicates that you do not have to enable this property. Is something forcing you to enable this property?
I have a parent list with four child lists and everything is working fine. So it does work when enabling the pre-load data property. You must have something wrong in your structure. If you want more help you will have to provide more information.

To save without having to synchronize you have to look at the synchronization policy in the detail view tab of the list control. Select 'Perform client-to-server synchronization whenever user saves edits to a row in a list'

Yes, Alpha is forcing me to to enable Pre-Load. It says something to the effect that "because the child lists (I have 7) have detail sections, you must enable Pre-Load." It displays this I get the warning when I render in preview and attempt to update a record via a detail section. The Detail sections were added via the Genie when I first added them to the the UX.

I tried the synchronize policy change. First the client to server, then the server to client, then both. All to no avail.

I will rebuild my UX, sans the Pre-Load and with the synch policy set to; "Perform client-to-server synchronization whenever user saves edits to a row in a list."

Do you have any other ideas? Are your lists referencing Views or SQL w/ Join syntax, or simply a table?

Thank you for your response Frank. BTW, will try dbForge Studio.

Re: Why must I "Pre-Load" data in child lists?

I did have problems with joins. I had to change to updateable views. I have found that the more you can offload from alpha the better and mysql seems to handle it better anyhow. I have seen others that are using joins however, and they seem to be successful. It seems that with the more child lists that you have the more joins cause problems.

The way I have learned to 'experiment' with alpha is to start small get it to work and then add on the accessories. Meaning use a single table make the child lists work the best you can then add joins, etc and see what happens.

another idea is since you are not using the mobile features to put your lists in separate uxes and then just link them together. It will require a callback but you are on a desktop browser. You should not have,to set the pre load data property and you are not limited by local storage capacity.

Turning on synchronize still forces me to turn on "pre-Load" "You are trying to synchronize data in a child List, but you have not checked the 'Pre-load data' property for this List. Please edit the definition for the 'LSTPROJECT' List and check the 'Pre-load data' option." No Joy.
