Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using built in Alpha FTP on a Mac running Parallels

Has anyone had luck on using the built in ftp client in Alpha when running Parallels on a Mac? The upload simple fails at the beginning of the publishing sequence (without a notification that the upload failed).

My development files are in a Dropbox folder. I access them using my Macbook Pro running Windows in Bootcamp. That setup works great with the built-in ftp (optimized and/or regular). Accessing the same files on my Mac running Parallels and it fails every timeeven though the ftp credentials succeed when tested.

Firewall settings are the same on both machines. Turning off the Windows firewall for testing purposes does not have any effect. Mac firewall is off during testing as well.

Since the exact same publishing profile is used by my Bootcamp Mac.and works.I am guessing it has something to do with Parallels and its settings.

    Anybody have suggestions?

    Thanks
    Greg

The built-in FTP requires an active connection. Have you tested another FTP client (FileZilla for instance) on the Parallels machine to confirm that you can connect and upload files with an active FTP connection. If so then you've narrowed it down to "something" in your Alpha profile, otherwise it's a port issue on the Parallels instance.

I think the answer may be the way you have the network adapter configured on your Parallels machine. In the Vmware configuration in order to use Active FTP you must use the bridged mode for the adapter rather than sharing the IP address of the Mac host. Here's a link to a discussion regarding this issue: https://forum.parallels.com/threads/...-client.97499/

        Hey Brad,

Thank you so much for your posts. I will definitely take a close look at the network adapter. I am able to upload files via ftp using Filezilla…so that part is good. The odd thing is that when I test my ftp credentials in the Alpha publishing profile area….I get confirmation that it does connect. The failure happens when I actually try to upload using Alpha.

I appreciate the link….will dig in and see if I can get this resolved!

        Thanks again

Re: Using built in Alpha FTP on a Mac running Parallels

What happens with FTP is that you can connect (via port 20) which is why your credentials work but must have direct access via port 21 for Active FTP or via a randomly specified port negotiated by the server for passive FTP to actually transfer files or even retrieve a directory listing. Passive FTP will work in a shared network adapter environment because the ports haven't already been used by the host. When you use Filezilla did you specify in the connection settings to use Active ftp? I'm guessing it is negotiating a passive connection and that is why it is working.

Re: Using built in Alpha FTP on a Mac running Parallels

Currently, I'm working with a Mac mini 2012 running Yosamite and Parallels 10.1.2. I did nothing special when settings up. It installed and then I created a VM and installed Windows 8.1... again, nothing special going on. I've had no issues, at all, publishing with Alpha's FTP... and I have InternalOptimized turned on.

But, my development files are not in a Dropbox folder. Where is your Dropbox folder? Isn't a "Dropbox" folder simply a folder within Windows that Dropbox uses to sync?

I would do a quick test. Copy a project from your Dropbox folder to a new, regular, boring folder... fire up Alpha... open up the project... and publish.

              Brad,

Your suggestion solved my problem…changing to Bridged Default network adapter allowed me to upload (even optimized) without issue. THANK YOU!

David…..I am running Windows 7 Ultimate…..maybe 8.1 and Parallels handles the settings more gracefully. I too, am running Yosemite on my new iMac but it definitely did not just work after installing things. Glad to hear your experience was a little smoother!

              Thanks again!!!

Glad that worked Greg. I've been a Vmware Workstation user since version 1.0 on Windows and I'm a huge fan of virtualization. I've also encountered a few of it's "gotchas" along the way.
