Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Parent & Child Lists

    Capture.PNG

In the attached picture, you see options when using the "List Control - Quick Setup Genie".

Where do I find the options Linking field - parent List and Linking field - this List IF I AM NOT USING THE QUICK SETUP GENIE?

In other words, I already have lists setup, styled and laid out how I want but need to connect a child to a parent and these 2 options are not here now when im looking at the child lists Data Source tab in the List Properties List builder pop-up window.

Also, I've been told I don't want to check the pre-load data checkbox in my application. Apparently, it creates an issue when trying to add a record with the Parent List.

        Re: Parent & Child Lists

Both of my lists have detail views so I cant exactly follow these videos. It wont let me set list1 return value to Field. I get an error that say I must use PrimaryKey since there is a Detail View.
So I changed it back to PrimaryKey (actually Alpha forces it to change back).

Do you know of any videos showing this kind of stuff WITH detail views?

          Re: Parent & Child Lists

Joe, I was able to create linked lists that use detail sections/view for a maximum of only two (2) lists. Add a third and "boom!" a compile bug.
My solution was to code separate UX controls and open them using Active JavaScript.

Could you post up a simple schema? Tables showing primary keys, foreign keys?

I was hoping to create/edit a job AND create/edit appointments for that job, all in one ux. I cant seem to get it working completely for just the 2 lists w/detail views.

Here is a video of what i'm dealing with.

Have you tried using an xbasic function to add a new record programmatically, then simply go to that record instead of trying add WHILE ON the UX. Doing the add record in advance, means you are always doing what already works for you, picking an existing record.

It's not that hard, (once you've done 100 times lol).

I'll give you an example. Made by mheller. Last Modification: Monday 16 of May, 2011 18:31:50 UTC by mheller.

I'd love to see an example of a Parent-Child list, each with Detail Views, having new records being added programmatically.

                        Re: Parent & Child Lists

Joe, haven't finished my first coffee yet, but have you ever tried calling the method: {dialog.object}.refreshListData('LISTCONTROLTOREFESH'); ?

I have a different set of problems to content with, so my JavaScript is buried within an event handler called OnBeforeHide. As an aside, this event is hidden under Window JavaScript Events in the Action JavaScript "Open a UX Component" dialog.

Joe, clearly you not be exposed to the Action JavaScript event mentioned above in your scenario. Perhaps a good place to start is the save button in the "Job Details" frame. You could convert the code to inline JavaScript and invoke the method refreshListData. Hint, make sure to work with a copy of the UX or the button before converting to inline JS.
