Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5_Encrypt_String and OpenSSL

I am attempting to encrypt a string in Alpha5 v11 3788-4187 using A5_Encrypt_String(). Then taking the output and using OpenSSL command line decrypt it. However I am missing something as it is currently not working for me.

In Alpha5 Interactive I am running:
    Code:
    ?a5_encrypt_string("This is a test string.","This_Is_A_Test_Key")
    = "hr2neVjvu2cWKkAFOWiAm5/IU5X3yFll"
Per Alphapedia Encryption Algorithms (Ciphers) the default is blowfish-cbc so I am using the following in OpenSSL

    Code:
    echo hr2neVjvu2cWKkAFOWiAm5/IU5X3yFll | c:\OPENSSL-Win64\bin\openssl.exe enc -base64 -A -nopad -d -bf-cbc -nosalt -pass pass:This_Is_A_Test_Key
    Which is resulting in
    Code:
    ┬ZS}≥┬τΩ+▬sD)pΩε)‼▬┴►9
So I then tried using OpenSSL to perform the encryption with:
    Code:
    echo This is a test string. | C:\OPENSSL-Win64\bin\openssl.exe enc -base64 -e -bf-cbc -nosalt -pass pass:This_Is_A_Test_Key
    This resulted in :
    Code:
    PdlVZVqXfJ3JqclfECVfLzrpPSXlquZPmhWFtyCrE/c=
When I attempt to decrypt this with Alpha5 I get:
    Code:
    ?a5_decrypt_string("PdlVZVqXfJ3JqclfECVfLzrpPSXlquZPmhWFtyCrE/c=","This_Is_A_Test_Key")
Error decrypting string. Is your pass phrase correct?
OpenSSL Description: error:06065064:digital envelope routines:EVP_DecryptFinal_ex:bad decrypt
If I attempt to encrypt and decrypt using only Alpha5 then I am successful. Same is true when using OpenSSL to encrypt and decrypt. What I want to do is make the two play along nicely.

    Re: A5_Encrypt_String and OpenSSL

Hi Andrew, it looks to me like you have the latest OpenSSL libraries ( v1.0.2) while your Alpha5 installation does not.
Copy ssleay32.dll and libeay32.dll ( located in its root ) from your OpenSSL installation directory.
    Paste them into your Alpha 5 install ( C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V11 ).

    Hope that helps!

      Re: A5_Encrypt_String and OpenSSL

I checked both dll's in both locations and they are for version 1.0.1k. The OpenSSL dll's were bigger but I am assuming that is because they were compiled to provide additional functionality that is above and beyond what the dll's for Alpha5 were compiled with. I did copy over the OpenSSL dll's to the Alpha5 directory. Reran the Alpha5 encryption and received the same result as previous.

It appears that this has been a issue for some time now. I have found the following threads but no known solution.

Andrew, i think this might be what you are looking for, it is what I use for my PGP implementations.
I personally do not use alpha's encryption, not that there is anything wrong with it.
if you need help with calling cryptoJS I'd be happy to give you a hand and code examples.

If you want to stay with OpenSSL instead of OpenPGP then this is what you want. It is excellent and I have worked with it before.

            Re: A5_Encrypt_String and OpenSSL

Thank you, I will take a look at the examples you posted. I sent a PM to Alpha and the response I received indicated that Alpha5 is a one off implementation of blowfish encryption and cross platform compatibility is not intended. Unfortunately this means I will need to forgo using Alpha5's built in functions.

              OpenPGP.js-Examples
I just opened a GitHub project that I've been meaning to do for a while.
For anyone interested in PGP encryption/decryption this will be a helpful place to start.
