Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report "keep together on page" challenge!!!

    Hi,

I have a report with multiple detailed SQL fields. some of these fields are text with "word wrap" enabled. Each field has a descriptive header.

    Issue;
If the report prints and a field results reaches the end of the page, it just continues on the next page. This leaves the header as well as part of the text on the 1st page.

HOW can I force the report to print the Header and text on the next new page. This should only be done once the page ended but the text no.

I want to keep the header as well as text together at all times.

    Regards

In the detail section properties, there is a keep together checkbox. have you tried that?

Right click where it says "detail" and look at the region properties. Note: You want the second detail section title.

BTW: If this is a grouping, there is also a keep together in the group properties, as well as a "start group on new page" property.

Hi, thanks so much for responding. Yes I have done that. Maybe a bit more detail will suffice.

There is multiple fields in the detail section [row based].

One row consist of the header and the next of the description. I require the header and description to stick together no matter on which line it falls. this takes the "detail" section "keep together" option to a more detailed level. Row based.

        Is this even possible?

Put the stuff you want to keep together into a group, even if that "group" is the primary key of the data (so a group of 1).

Then put the keep together at the group level.

Did that work for you Solarscholar?

I've been recently discussing row-based 'keep' (and linked report-based keep) with Cian at Alpha. I have a similar report to yours, with a header and detail, and rows seem to keep together fine when run as a standalone report. However, when used as a linked report it loses all page breaks and keep settings, so each group splits over pages. Not sure if this is exactly the same as your problem, but I'll post any further responses here.

              Hi,

Yip I have partial success. It still seems to "creep" over pages as the line spaces does not stay consistent. especially when you have more linked records. The "suppress blank lines" tab jumps back to false without me touching it. If this could stay stable, I believe the issue would be much closer to being cleared.

I really do appreciate your feedback on this.

                http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Inserting+a+Page+Break

can you take a look at this page on soft page breaks?
the soft breaks occur when the following part does not fit in one page and a page break is inserted. see if this might help by placing soft break before the heading.

                  Hi Again. How are you?

In a freeform report I am able to do this, however, where/how do I insert this in a table layout report?

                        Hi Rohan,

We have identical issues. If standalone, the layout report groups and "keeps together" perfectly. Absolutely beautiful, BUT run this report as a linked report and chaos erupts.

                        Yip same.

Not yet I'm afraid, still waiting for a further response.

The last email I had from Cian a couple of weeks ago suggested he'd thought of a way to resolve the problem, so I assume he's still working on it. Looking at your attachment, it seems that we are indeed experiencing the same issue so hopefully we'll have a solution soon - I'll post an update as soon as I have one.
