Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    timeDiff function was working perfectly and them just stopped working

    I created a form and a grid that included a timeDiff function that performed perfectly for quite a while. It is the exact timediff function that is described in the videos.

    Now it simply doesn't work in either place. It appears that the function will only calculate the difference between two dates in hours. For example, my start date is 3/3/2015 12:00pm and my end date is 3/3/2015 3:00pm with a 0 response. If I change the end date/time to 3/4/2015 3:00pm it returns 24hours.

    JavaScript is still new to me so I need simple instructions. If someone has an answer that helps me understand why the function would simply stop working.
    I may also be helpful to mention that I started a simple grid in a different app and the function does not work there either.

    Here's the function.

    function timeDiff(time1, time2) {

    if(isNaN(Date.parse(time1)) || isNaN(Date.parse(time2)))return '';

    return ( ((Date.parse(time2) -Date.parse(time1))/1000)/60/60 )
    }

    I meant to add that I am using v12.

      Date.parse doesn't like "am" or "pm". It returns NaN when it encounters these values. Drop "pm" from your strings and see if that gets you closer to what you expect.

        I really appreciate your quick response. Thanks.

        Tried creating a new form and testing the timeDiff in that form and in a grid. Did not work. Obviously this is a little frustrating as I have 4 MS Access forms that I need to convert to Alpha and they all need this functionality.

          Can you post your testing form here?

            return ( ((Date.parse(time2) -Date.parse(time1))/1000)/60/60 )
            }
            The fact that it only changes when you change the day implies it's only looking at the date and that's why when the date changes by 1 day, you get 24 hours.

            Is the grid editable and you want the calculations to occur as the move from field to field OR could they hit submit and calculate then?

            Is it a text box they just type in and you hope formatting is good? If so could you break it into a date and time text box and use date and time pickers to assure error free editing?

            If you can live with a trip back to the server, you can use xbasic instead of javascript.

              if you post your testing form or grid as sarah has suggested you will get an answer, I am sure.
