Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with expression

    I am trying to setup an expression where, when opening a browse it asks for the following:

    I have a Mailer_No field I want it to ask me "What Mailer Number" and will filter all records CONTAINING the entered number.

    OR

    I have an Address field and I want it to ask me "What Address" and it will filter to all records CONTAINING any of the text in the address field (ie. If ONLY the street name is known, all records CONTAINING the street name would be selected or if only the address is known, it will show all records CONTAINING the address numbers).

    Thought this would work, but it does not.

    ((var->AskC_What_Mailer_Number$mailer_no)).or.((var->AskC_What_Address$address))

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Chris

    Re: Help with expression

    The syntax in the filter expression will vary depending upon the data types involved.

    Are both mailer_no and address fields character data typed?

    Please describe the results you're getting using various input values.

    Tell us where you've placed the filter.

    I'm not a particular fan of using the Ask_C variables. You might consider getting the search criteria first, and then using that to filter the browse when it opens. Your post suggest you're opening the browse and expecting Alpha to then prompt for the search criteria.

      Re: Help with expression

      Both are character fields.
      Right now nothing happen Browse opens showing all records in rec_Num order. The browse is embedded in a form. I hit a button on one form. The new form opens with embedded browse in it. When the button is pressed the dialog box pops up asking me for my search criteria. No mater what I enter in the dialog boxes, I just get all records.

        Re: Help with expression

        Opening a form with an embedded browse is a very different thing than opening a browse.

        Is the called form based on a set of tables, or just one table?

        Does the called form have a permanent filter already? ( You'd see this in the Properties window for the form itself )

          It is based on a .set and yes the form does have the permanent filter in its properties.

          ((var->AskC_What_Mailer_Number$mailer_no)).or.((var->AskC_What_Address$address))

            Re: Help with expression

            As Tom indicated, ask variables are not popular theses days due to their lack of flexibility and the newer options available. A simple xdialog would make it easy for the user to make a choice of which type of data to enter and filter the opening form appropriately.

            Something like this.

            Code:
            DIM SHARED dtype as C
            DIM SHARED entry as C
            DIM SHARED varC_result as C
            ok_button_label = "&OK"
            cancel_button_label = "&Cancel"
            varC_result = ui_dlg_box("Alpha Five",<<%dlg%
            {region}
            {region}Choose Mailer or Address:{endregion}|
            {region}(dtype:Mailer Number);
            (dtype:Address);{endregion};
            ;
            Enter value to filter by:| [.40entry];
            {endregion};
            {line=1,0};
            {region}
            <*15=ok_button_label!OK> <15=cancel_button_label!CANCEL>
            {endregion};
            %dlg%)
            if alltrim(dtype) = "" .or. alltrim(entry) = ""
            	end
            else
            	if dtype = "Mailer"
            	:form.ViewQueried("yourformname","Mailer_no = "+quote(var->entry))
            	else
            	:form.ViewQueried("yourformname","Address = "+quote(var->entry))
            	end if
            end if

                Re: Help with expression

                Amended my previous post with a sample. Replace yourformname with the actual form name. Mailer_no and address are fields in the parent table of the set?

                This would be the code for a button on the form where you want to open the second form.

                  Re: Help with expression

                  The dialog box looks great. But it returns "No Records in Query". Yes the Parent table has these fields. I've tried both an exact entry of a mailer no as well as just the street name in an address and got the same message of "No Records in Query"

                    Re: Help with expression

                    I was concentrating on the xdialog and neglected to pay attention to your filter preference.

                    if dtype = "Mailer"
                    :form.ViewQueried("yourformname",var->entry $ mailer_no)
                    else
                    :form.ViewQueried("yourformname",var->entry $ address)
                    end if

                    would be the syntax for the contained in queries.

                    To test first to see if we're on the right track, open the default form for the set, use the Query menu, Query by expression, and try each of the filters.

                    "Elm" $ address
                    "457" $ mailer_no
                    There can be only one.

                      Chris,

                      Work fine on my test and The form is base on single table.

                      Yes the Parent table has these fields.
                      - Are you trying it from SET table?

                        Yes it is from a set. Queries work fine from default form. Getting an error though when running normally. Also, though the error seems to be on the Address field. It does exist.

                          Error as in.........?

                          "No Records in Query" is not an error, just means no records fit the query. We may have to see a sample database to see what's not working.

                          My bad, should have said you needed

                          if dtype = "Mailer"
                          :form.ViewQueried("yourformname",quote(var->entry)+" $ mailer_no")

                              Ok. Address is working fine. But Mailer_No is giving No Records in Query. I copied and pasted a record number from the parent table into the dialog box field for mailer_no "5-031383" and still got no record in query.
