Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Excel Import to Grid does not work

    Hi all,

New to Alpha and in the process of learning about the features it has I decided to try the 'Import from Excel...' feature.
I have followed the videos in the Video Finder and have had success once before in importing records to 'Current_Grid'. However in a new workspace, in trying to upload to the grid, the import gives me the following message: 'Import success:Number of Imported Records:0'.

Note that the excel file has 5 records, and all column headings match that of the grid, as well as column headings are in the first row.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What grid are you talking about? Do you mean table?

The import feature allows you to load the data in two ways, 'CurrentGrid', which is the grid on the page or 'external' which is a table in a connected database. My grid does not update or get the values from the excel file after the import action has been completed saying success.

            OK,

May I suggest to import to a table and then use the data on your "grid".

Understand that there may be better ways, but I do not use grids on the desktop as I prefer forms.

You can do this in operations I think. I generally do it from the cp.

I just tested the import from the operations tab, right click on the cp space, choose import. I did a rather complicated xls file and it worked very well to get the data into a new table.

Re: Excel Import to Grid does not work

OK, so I am back to the same issue, maybe I should re-detail the issue I am having.

I wish to utilize the action JavaScript "Import excel..." action. The user of the system is supposed to be able to import from an Excel file to an SQL database table. I watched the tutorial and followed it step by step in the past, and was able to do an import (once), however doing this again in another workspace/project, I have issues. The excel file matches the database, so there is no problem there. When I click the button (to run the action JavaScript) I am prompted for the file to upload, I select it and then I click the upload button. I get the message "Success, Number of Imported Records is : 0".

I have tried files of the following extensions with no success, (just the same message): .xls, .xlsx, .csv

I don't know if this is a bug, or something wrong with what I am doing at this point. I have spent maybe 2 weeks on and off trying to figure this out, or find a work around with no success. Frustrated is an understatement.

Not that I will be much help here, but... For others:
you did not mention sql in the first post, so I(for 1) did not know that.
                  what version excel?
                  what sql? mssql, myswl, or???
does sql not have an import feature?
Are you trying to import to alpha and then export to sql? or some other method from alpha to sql??
Possibly a similar .xls file to work with? Where we can test if there is a problem with that?
