Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 5 Version 5 migration solution

I have an inventory database running on A5v5 within a Windows XP enviroment. I am replacing that machine with a Windows 7 x64 desktop and I need to know what my best upgrade path would be. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Alpha 5 Version 5 migration solution

The desktop version of Alpha is and will likely always be a 32 bit application. A5V11 if still available http://www.alphasoftware.com/older.asp runs nicely on a Win7 64 bit machine. I am not aware of any features added in V12/Anywhere.
    There can be only one.

      Hi Matt,
I am in the same boat - what were you thinking of buying for the desktops and or server?

I have a download of A5v11 I will install and see if I can make it work the way I want during the 30 day into period, if so I think that's about $400 right now. If not it may be a good time to have and get through the headache of jumping ship to another DB program, maybe Access or Filemaker, idk.

          v11 also runs on win8 - 8.1.
Remember that win 10 is going to be available shortly for free. You may need v12/or to be able to use it. Not tested yet!

Some of your v5 code will run on v11-12 until you open it for a change where it may need more help. I say this because I am working on an app now that was in v5 then v8 and I am moving it to v12. If the code was not opened, it seemed to work, but due to other changes, it had to be re done.

For the little bit of difference, Get v12 for the future. Call them and negotiate a little bit? You would for a car.

            Matt,
We upgraded from ver 5 to ver 10 a few years ago, and because of the massive amount of x-basic code we had, it took us quite a while. Just be aware that if you have a lot of x-basic, you will need to go over your code very carefully. There was a pretty big change in x-basic between 5 and 10. We are now going from 10 to 12 and I see no real difference in the x-basic.
