Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Offline - how long for?

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first post to the forum, so be gentle with me. :)

I have built an access database which manages activity centres. Tracks courses, customers, transactions, equipment servicing etc.

I am in the planning stages of upgrading to Alpha and moving it to a browser/mobile based solution. The thing that sold it to me was the offline access capabilities, but having investigated a bit further, I'm not sure if Alpha does what i require. Can anyone please advise?

Because of where many of the centres are, internet access can be unreliable and slow (none for two weeks straight at one point this year, then fine but slow.) Centre owners are very aware of this and are not interested in an online only solution. So can I have a local system (a local web server) which synchronises with the online service when there is internet access? As far as i can see, this is not what Alpha's offline capabilities are.

    Thanks for your help!

    Oli

    Welcome to the forum.
Your query might be better placed here http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...r-Applications since more people will see it and may provide better answers.

I do desktop only, but know alpha has worked extensively on offline capabilities for the web, but not sure about 2 weeks worth.

    Good Luck

To do what you want you'd need to get the alpha server, use your access mdb (I assume mdb) as your data source then create the ux (dialogs), grids, pages, etc. When you make LISTS those are what can facilitate offline mode and syncing of which you speak is between the mobile devices and your publically facing alpha server.

Here's a good place to start getting info. Alpha Videos: type offline in the search. http://videos.alphasoftware.com/vam_video_grid.a5w

Oliver like Clint stated however. Thought has to be given to ?????/how long and how often you are going to be able to connect? and what info is to be on the device etc..
If you are not with in range for a bit or days may effect what you do and how.

Re: Alpha Offline - how long for?

I believe you're talking about synchronizing data between satellite servers and a main server... not really offline stuff. You'll be running an Intranet where users are going to be online locally... there is no off-line between your users and your local server. When you do have an internet service you want your local server to sync with your main server. This is purely a SQL Update process... and certainly possible with Alpha.

Thank you everyone for your help and answers.

I think my question has been answered- the offline capabilities might work, but if there is a long delay between internet sessions, there might not be sufficient space. So, would have to go for Davidk's solution for a more robust solution.
