Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application Server Help

So I have setup a VPS with the Alpha Application Server running Windows Server 2008.

I have setup FTP to be able to publish to the server from my local machine.

When I remote into the VPS, I can see all the files have been publish to the right location, and open a browser and try typing localhost to see if I will able to see my project.

    I get the following:

This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.

I am pretty new to all this fun stuff (meaning setting up a VPS and Alpha Anywhere developing).

So my question is, what could be the problem?

Is there something I need to configure/re-configure with my VPS.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What port are you running it on? If it is 81 then it may need to look like this: http://localhost:81/login.a5w

The Alpha web server is either not running or you have not published the files to the right location. Open the server's configuration and see what the Document Root is; the files should be published to that folder. Also, turn on logging, especially the Access, Error and Stack logs.

The logging is on and the Document Root is the exact location that the files have been published to.

As far as I know it the server is running.

Is there certain Microsoft Server Roles that have to be installed. The only thing I installed is IIS, for the FTP Site?

Ah, perhaps IIS is the culprit. Make sure that IIS is not using port 80. Typically that means you find the default site and toggle it off.

I removed the Default Web Site for IIS because I was not able to start the Web Application Server until I did so. Is there any other configurations that I need to know about with IIS to make it work?

                No that would be it.

We need to get more information about your 500 error. That typically means it HAS found your website but there is a programming problem. That should be reflected in the error or stack log. Or if you are using IE, you need to go to Internet Options and under the Advanced tab find "Show friendly HTTP error messages" and uncheck that feature, and then try your website again. It should give more info about the 500 error in the browser. Also when using FTP Alpha very often does not publish all of the files you ask it to. It can leave out whole folders, or a class of files.

once you have activated IIS it grabs the port 80 no matter what you do in my experience. I would change alpha port to 82 to make it work.

here is one article, as you can see they also ended up with different port

A 500 error typically means it hit the server (correct port, etc) but has a problem.

I don't know the windows server very well, but I have had errors on Linux with ".htaccess" files where it did not have the proper startup init for the file type needed.

Like it had index.htm and index.php, but missing index.html. Does alpha use index.a5w?

I have a noobie question.. do I have to install the Application Server role within Windows Server? Or do I not have to because I installed the Alpha Application Server already?

You've already installed the Alpha web server, there is nothing else to do with Windows Server "roles" configuration.

                            Re: Application Server Help

Two things that were an issue..

First, I had renamed a web component before publishing and saw that my index.a5w was searching for that particular component's old version hence the getting the server error.

Secondly I had mistakenly not unchecked upload only new files so when I fixed my index.a5w it wasn't getting updated.

So I fixed those two issues.. opened a browser while remotely connect to my VPS and went to localhost.. and was able to see my application.

Now when trying to access the application from my own computer through the browser by typing in the server's IP address I get ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

                            What should I try now??

btw. Thank you everybody for their input, help, and advice up to this point.

So got the server to run. Overlooked the fact that I need to open the firewall for the Application Server.

Anyways, I have ran into another issue.

I have some php pages that wont work with the Application Server. Do I have to "tell" the Application Server how to handle php pages? Before I installed the Alpha Anywhere Application Server I had successfully installed PHP on my Windows Server, but when running the Alpha Server they do not. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
