Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can I integrate the search I created in Alpha Anywhere into my own web page (s)?

Can someone help me with this?

I have a .dbf table containing 15 fields.

Using the Web Projects Control Panel I created a grid and .aw5 page based on the .dbf with a search facility and a results table.

All seems to be working OK - I can search on multiple fields from the .dbf and it gives me the results all nicely displayed in the table below the search box.

Now I want to be able to place the search into my "static" .html web-site so my customers can use it.

What do I need to do to achieve this? .

I know a bit about html, css and have been experimenting with responsive web design techniques.

I am quite clueless on javascript and sql.

Can I just upload the .dbf table to my hosting account or do I have to convert the .dbf to sql or something ? (?)

I am using MS Expression Web as my html and css editor.

Any help and guidance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

    thanks

An Alpha grid has to be run using the Alpha web server so no you cannot run it in your .html page without the Alpha server. If you are hosting a html website using MS Expr, then you might have a hosting account without access to the desktop. You need access to the Windows desktop to install Alpha server.

Your other options are run an Alpha web server somewhere else and put an IFrame in your static html. The IFrame would show your Alpha grid. That option still require you (or someone) to run your searchable component in Alpha server. When it comes to data, you can stick with DBF or convert to SQL, either are fine.

Thanks very much for your reply Steve.

I use windows 8.1 and can access all my directories/files on my web-site via my hosting providor control panel. I am allowed one sql connection although I have never used it.

Now, I am a little massively out of my depth, but here goes:

What is the Alpha server? (I've never really used this side of alpha)

Is it included with Alpha Anywhere?

Where do I get Alpha server from?

      Where do I install it?

Are there any questions should I be asking my hosting providor regarding specific support for Alpha Anywhere?

When you say "you need access to the Windows desktop to install Alpha server", what does this mean?

How do I put it all together?

      thanks

Re: Can I integrate the search I created in Alpha Anywhere into my own web page (s)?

Alpha comes in two parts - the Developer and the Application Server. Developer you know about, you used it to build your search grid. Developer has a built-in App server just for testing, you cannot deploy a commercial product using the built-in App server. To actually run for multiple users, on the web, etc. you need to purchase and install the Application Server. If you purchased Developer, you must have gone to www.alphasoftware.com and purchased the product. The Application Server is sold at the same location. If your copy of Developer is just a trial download, you are going to have to purchase both Developer and Application Server.

Alpha Application Server runs on MS Windows platform, so if your server is Linux or for any other reason does not have a normal Windows desktop, then you cannot install the Application Server.

If your only purpose is to display this single grid with search ability and have no additional project plans, and unless this is a really important small project, you may find it cost-prohibitive to use Alpha.
