    Default Portuguese special characters

I have successfuly imported to a mySql database text fields with portuguese special characters . I can also add or edit new records using alpha as a front end, but now i would like to achieve something else :

it is very common when searching for a string like "café" , that the user only types "cafe" for the sake of typing speed as the last character takes two keyboard strokes (people got used to it because google translates inmediately "cafe" into "café". Is there a way to apply this principle to searches in a grid or UX ? Of course I would need to come up with all the portuguese special characters, I just cant figure out how to make it work.

can somebody point me right way so that I could investigate further.

    Thanks

I am working with a new indexing program named Omnidex that provides "fuzzy search" meaning it will automatically look for variations of "Cafe" when the person searches on that term. But it is an expensive option right now because the expectation is that the database is VERY large and needs ultra-indexing. I am working with the vendor to provide a different pricing structure to cater to smaller databases. I can tell you more after I get back from vacation on the 21st.

Mean time, you should look to see if Alpha has a "soundex" search type; I don't know that it does.

    Steve,

Before I wrote my previous post I was trying to search for strings with portuguese characters but the strings stored in the database where not yet identified as such. "maça" was being stored as "ma?a"
now that all the characters are properly stored , and much to my surprise when I look for the string "maca" I get "maça"
    it also finds ã when typing a, or â typing a , * typing a

so, it seems to work as I intended.
Interesting feature the soundex function, that i will try anyhow.

    thanks
