Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 10

I'm opening this thread for a Windows 10 discussion as it is now descending upon the masses.
I received TH1 Professional 10204 today from the Insider Preview program and I like it.
I haven't installed Alpha Anywhere yet but will report any problems here first when I do.

    Re: Windows 10

Hi Michael, thanks for opening this thread. I' am running alpha 5 v.9 with windows 8.1 and have design a database for our community association that I can't afford to stop using. I sent an email to Alpha Software, asking whether V9 will run in Windows 10, but haven't received an answer. I wonder if you have an answer.

    Regards,

    Hernn

Hi Hernan and welcome to the forum.
I know from experience that version 11 does not play nice with IE11, and I would say the same for version 9 and MS Edge.
Try hitting your server and see if your grids work in Edge. Let me know how it went.

        Re: Windows 10

I've installed the Alpha Anywhere bundle with no issues at all.
I have no copies of version 11 to try but I assume the infamous "access denied" on a grid will remain an issue.

          Re: Windows 10

I did an upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. This was done on my home computer where I only run the v12 Developer and run only as localhost.
After the upgrade, the Developer server indicated it couldn't start because port 80 was already in use.
It seems that Windows 10 enabled the IIS service by default, at least I don't recall selecting it to be installed.
Nevertheless, I went into Windows Programs & Features and unselected the IIS services, and the Developer now runs fine.
No other issues noted with Windows 10 so far with AA.

Some of my Windows 10 general observations:
          - can't import Firefox bookmarks to Edge
          - no Aero Glass theme
          - the upgrade went without a hitch, nothing got broken which is a feat in itself
          - the configurable start panel is great
Windows 10 is so far a fantastic OS !

I wonder what makes Windows 10 a fantastic OS if you compare it to Windows 7 pro.

One thing is sure you lost your privacy also in desktop and users are forced to automatic updates.

I am sure that companys will wait again five years to see what happens to Windows 10 in real life.

              I don't know what you're getting at.

Welcome to the new norm Ken. What are you going to do never upgrade an OS ever again?
Most of the data going back to Microsoft is opt-in or opt-out, easily changeable in the Privacy settings.
Cortana can be turned off (by the way, Apple has been doing this for a while with Siri).
This type of big data collection is only going to get larger as time marches on .. and likely with no opting out. Get used to it.

Of course they will, corporations are typically the last to upgrade OS's. Our hospital I.T. department only just moved from XP to Win 7 this year.
I mentioned that I did this on my home computer.

Here is nice article about Microsofts new small print in Windows 10.

Now it seems that as a customer I will do the same I did with Windows 8.

Future will show how massive succes Windows 10 will be and what advantages users/companys get from giving away their privacy and data in desktop.

Yep, it sucks but it is going to get worse I fear.

                    Re: Windows 10

So this tread was started in V11 WAS area and referring to Alpha Anywhere??

How about anyone having problems with A5V11 developer in Windows 10 that wasn't already an IE issue that Alpha refused to fix in V11.

I just upgraded to Windows 10. I still develop in Windows 7 using a duel boot setup. I have several web databases served on the Alpha V11 WAS running on Windows Server 2008. I can report that so far Windows Edge browser seems to be doing very well my messy database creations. In fact, it seems to serve them up quicker than Chrome or IE11. I use a lot of exporting to excel and word and so far all exporting functions are working fine in Edge on Windows 10 pro with Office 2013 installed.

I have two rather ugly glorified metabolic simulators written in xbasic and using tabbed dialog that work fine.

So I don't think Edge is breaking anything for end users in my existing A5V11 projects.

Still not confident enough to move development to Windows 10 until and unless others more brave give the OK. :-)

                      Re: Windows 10

We are working through known issues in Windows 10.
                      • Port 80 is used by the Win 10 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' that uses some IIS features. For most users, this service can be shut off.
                      • Windows 10 has apparently added some security restrictions, so it is best to run the executable as an administrator. Find the 'alpha5.exe' program in the install folder, right click, select properties, and go to the compatibility tab. Check the option to 'Run as administrator'. We may add this to the install program after more investigation.
                      • The only issue we have seen so far with Edge is the PDF viewer. The viewer has limited options compared to more PDF viewers as it appears the only option is 'Save as' and there are no print options or view settings.

We have tested A5v10 and A5V11 on Windows 10. A5V10 will run if running in Windows 7 compatibility mode and as administrator. A5V11 runs when run as administrator. We cannot yet verify if there are any specific issues in any version, but continue to test all versions in Windows 10

                        Re: Windows 10

                        Just to add my bit,

I upgraded my laptop to Win 10, my Alpha V12 works fine no problems except.

My SQL Server - services won't start automaticaly, i have to manually start SQL Service for a conncetion to local datbase to work. (Once service is started I don't have any other problems - yet, But have to do it each time I start Windows ).

And - My local application will no longer open PDF reports. (Keep getting an error). I have got a work around, in the Project settings I have slelected for XPS to be converted to PDF prior to deliver to browers.

From there all seems to be working okay.

I actually like the WIN 10 interface, but have not experienced any benefits in performance...

                        Cheers.

                          Re: Windows 10

Adding in my 2 cents as an Alpha developer. I had a user go through an upgrade process on their "work" PC.
first of all my web application ran just fine, they couldn't print anything as there are no drivers for their printer yet! Windows recommendation - buy a newer printer, lol.
So as far as Alpha goes, for the end user I did not see a problem other than hardware. For me as a developer I will wait until I need a new printer.
As crazy as it sounds, it seems that's the best time to upgrade an OS.
Look around at your old printers and try to remember what version of windows that POS worked with, lol
and by POS I mean printer of service...

If you upgrade win7 to win10, you should still have the option to use ie11 if needed.
I lost one of the best printers I ever had when going from winxp to win7, so very familiar with hardware losses.
I have only upgraded the laptop so far. Need to check it with the 2 year old Epson I have.
I could not find any issues with alpha v12 on the desktop side so far. It was already installed and is still there.
