Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Session variable not passing back to page unless I reload the page after login

    So this might be a noob question but I'm new to web development and I have created a login.a5w page that gets the current user in the HTML xbasic code, not server side.

    I put some more xbasic code to display that information on my page but it only displays after I click reload.

    I then use that user name to filter a grid in a tabbed UI. If I reload the page and then manually go to the tabbed UI it pulls the correct information. If I don't reload or have an auto redirect the session variable does not seem to pass to the grid. I'm really confused as to what is going on.

    This is my code from the login page:

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <%a5 dim session.Userid as c = "" %>
    <html>

    Then inside the component chunk of code i have:
    <%a5 ?"User: "+if(variable_exists("session.Userid"),session.Userid,"") %>
    I have this below the body tag to output the value of the session variable for testing purposes.

    Like I said this last bit only displays something after "User: " if I refresh after the login.

    Hmm i guess I should be taking some action after login to refresh everything?

    Not really sure.

    What is it you are trying to do? ...just create a login component that sets up a userid session variable and then redirect the user to your main page?

    BTW, welcome to the forum.

      Re: Session variable not passing back to page unless I reload the page after login

      Thank you for the welcome and sorry for not being more clear, but yes, that is essentially what I want to do. I have a login page and a tabbed UI. When the user logins they should go to the tabbed UI and the grid component should filter based on username. The query only returns projects associated to that user.

      For some reason this works if I reload the login page and then redirect to the tabbed UI. I'm not sure if this is the norm and if there would be any implications later by doing it this way. It seems like the code in the on login event that sets the session variable only works on reload not when the user first logs in. Here is the code I'm currently using in the login component's onlogin event:

      dim session.Userid as c = ""
      session.Userid = a5ws_getcurrentuser()

      '---reload and then redirect so session variable saves

      e.url = "Login.a5w"
      e.url = "TabbedUI_UXProjects.a5w"

        Take a look at this thread: http://www.alphasoftware.com/alphafo...-report-letter

        It starts out talking about a report but around post #5 we get into setting session variables via the login component.

        All of this code goes into the onLogin server-side event of your login component. You don't write anything on the login.a5w page.

          Re: Session variable not passing back to page unless I reload the page after login

          Awesome it worked!

          Now I have:

          if e.loginSucceeded = .t.
          session.Userid = a5ws_getcurrentuser()
          e.url = "TabbedUI_UXProjects.a5w"
          end if

          This works, but I'm not sure why it required the "if e.loginSucceeded" though, since obviously it logged me in all the other times I just had to reload the page to get the session variable to save.

            It isn't required but many developers want to perform other functions based on if a login succeeded or not. For example I log successful and failed logins and I do it in the same server-side event.
