Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Just want to capture login username to be able to use in grid query

    I just want to be able to capture the username when you log into web database so that I can use in the filter when loading a grid. I do not need to lookup any additional information from a table or anything, just simply the user name.

    Preferably if you can point me too a function/option already built in. But if code is only way please advise.

    Thank you for your time.

    You need to redirect to an intermediary a5w page before going to your real page. So create a page and point the security settings to go to that page after login.

    Then on that page you could put code like this:

    Code:
    <%a5
    session.UserName = A5ws_GetCurrentUser()
    %>
    Then you can use the session variable (session.UserName) in the grid filter. You'll have to assign that var to an argument and filter on the argument.

      Re: Just want to capture login username to be able to use in grid query

      Peter, I'm having trouble entering the "filter" in the Grid. If I understand correctly, I need to enter an argument in the filter field, along with an argument in "Define Arguments" section?

      If this is the case, can you maybe advise how to write these arguments?

      Thanks

        Re: Just want to capture login username to be able to use in grid query

        Sorry Peter, I think I got the define argument. I believe my problem is that I have not been able to place the code you provided above in the right place.

        If at all possible, can you advise how to setup an intermediary page you mention above. And probably equally important how do I add a button or function on this intermediary page to redirect to the navigation pane to then open the grid that will be using this variable?

        Hopefully this question makes sense...

        Thanks again, Casey

          Correct.

          Define your argument - using the name of the session variable.
          Then define your filter using the argument - e.g.

          UserName = :UserName

          where the first UserName is the field name and the second :UserName (preceded with the colon) is the argument.

            1. Create an a5w page. Let's say you name it "Initialize.a5w".
            2. Go to source view.
            3. Delete all the default HTML on the page - we don't need it. The page is only being used to execute some xbasic; we're not using the page to render anything.
            4. Put code in the page similar to this:

            Code:
            <%a5
            session.UserName = A5ws_GetCurrentUser()
            response.redirect("Your_real_target_page_name.a5w")
            %>
            From the web controlpanel, go to web security/web security configuration/Login Options/Redirect page after login...

            Select the "Initialize.a5w" page.

            Save, publish and test.

              Re: Just want to capture login username to be able to use in grid query

              Peter! Thank you for your patience with me on this.....The additional code you provided for the page redirect did the trick!

              My grid loads up properly per the user ID that is logged in.

              This has been a major stumbling block for me over the last week. All the rest of the functionality in Alpha five has pretty much sold me and will most likely be getting with our IT Director to purchase license.

              I know this may sound basic, but this is major for me in opening up a plethora of development ideas for corporate applications.

              I may have some additional questions that I'm seeking a couple pointers and I should be good to go.....

              Thanks again my friend.

                Glad to hear that it helped Casey. Not sure why Alpha has never made this clear. But if you don't know the "secret", it can be a major stumbling block, as you say.
