Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Scripting

    Hello

I needed to free up some space on my laptop and have now get the following error when I try to fire up Alpha V10.

It allows me to select a database but then comes up with the message
Windows scripting needs to be installed

I have reinstalled Alpha and still get the message.

The link in the dialogue is no longer valid, so I downloaded the XP version (scripten) (my laptop is Win 7)

However, when I run it I get the message "Not enough storage"

    Any help would be great.

Thanks for your help. It is very much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Re: Windows Scripting

    Hello

I have now found out that if I log in as a user the Windows scripting message occurs.

If I log in as administrator, the database opens up as expected.

If I then go and try to create a desktop short cut, nothing happens.

Ah the joys of computing eh!

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Kind regards

      Alex:

If you scroll down to the bottom of this thread, there are several older threads regarding scripting errors. Did you already see them, and exhaust those solutions?

        Hello Craig

        Hello

I have tried all of these and still I get the same message

Windows scripting needs to be installed. Please download and install it from -----broken link---

Does anyone know where I can download a copy of windows scripting for Windows 7 64 bit?

Thanks for your help. It is very much appreciated.

        Kind regards

"If I log in as administrator, the database opens up as expected."

Are you saying everything works just fine when you are signed in as an administrator, but not when signed into another profile?

If so, there is a permissions issue, and Windows Scripting is just a casualty of the restrictions on the user profile.

            Hello Craig

I get the message when I select the database.

It will then launch the database.

If I sign in as administrator it then opens the database.

However if I sign in as a user, it displays the Windows scripting error message and does not go any further.

I then have to kill the A5 program.

Thanks for taking the time to help me.

            Much appreciated.

                Alex:

Sorry, I blurred the lines there, thinking you meant the Windows sign in.

Try what Stan said. He's smarter than I, so it's a great suggestion.

                If the problem persists:

What code are you running when the database opens that differentiates an administrator from a non-functional user? Do you get in if you use <CTRL><SHIFT> and bypass the startup form and the autoexec script?

                  Hi Stan

I have tried the scanning suggested in the thread. It returned no errors.

I then tried Dan Jones suggestion in the same thread

I got errors on some but not on others.

I attach what the errors messages are.

                  Thanks for your input.

                    Re: Windows Scripting

Is your operating system 32 or 64 bit?

If 64 bit (from the Internet):

                    •jscript.dll
                    •dispex.dll
                    •scrobj.dll
                    •scrrun.dll
                    •wshext.dll
                    •wshom.ocx

Note that if you are running a 64-bit edition of Windows using a 64-bit scripting file, you will need to type %systemroot%\system32\regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\{filename here}.dll in the command prompt window.

If you are using a 64-bit edition of Windows but running a 32-bit edition of scripting components, you will need to type %systemroot%\syswow64\regsvr32 %systemroot%\syswow64\[filename here}.dll.

Also, when opening the command prompt in Win 7 regardless 32 or 64 bit, right click and open as administrator.

If I open the database using administrator, it opens.
If I then go to the Control Panel and try and create a shortcut, it does nothing!

The Create Shortcut may invoke Windows Scripting, so it doesn't work.

Try re-registering with the 64 bit path after opening the command prompt to 'run as administrator'.

You might also check to see if the dll files actually exist in those folders, if you still get an error.

                              Craig

You have been very helpful as indeed has everyone else trying to help me with this issue.
However, at the back of my mind there were uncomfortable feelings that even if the problem was fixed; it would surely go wrong in the future.
In the end, I flattened and rebuilt my demonstration machine.

The last thing anyone wants is a flaky demo - either receiving one or delivering it.

Once again thanks for your kind help.

                              Kind Regards
